When I record I can't hear anything. I have no monitor sound at all. I can record... and then I have sound when I listen to what I recorded on playback so I think my audio hardware settings are okay, but during any recording attempt I got nothing. I feel like I have tried everything... but obviously I have overlooked something. Can anyone help?

Cool Edit Pro and Adobe Audition (through v 1.5) don't support monitoring within the software. To monitor you need some way of routing your playback device through headphones.

I am assuming your routing is properly set up since you can hear the tracks play back when you are not recording new ones.

lpdeluxe - currently I have my headphones plugged direcly into the output jack of my computer. I don't change anything between recording and playback other than the selection in Cool Edit (i.e. "play" vs. "record"). I think my routing is correct... and it implies a conflict within Cool Edit. What could I be missing?

The headphone jack won't do the job. CEP needs an external device to route the signal to for monitoring during overdubbing. This is a limitation in the software.

Audition 2.0 now includes monitoring capability, but it also (for the first time) has ASIO drivers. I'm not aware of how well it works, but I've got 2.0 on order.

There are some relatively inexpensive boxes that connect via USB that have headphone jacks: you plug one in, select it via the Options/Device Order menu, and it will work. I can't recommend any since I use a digital mixer for the purpose, connected to a Terratec sound card via fiberoptics.

You may also be able to monitor while recording if your audio driver permits routing adjustments. What kind of audio card do you have?

My OS is Windows XP.
I manage to adjust monitoring levels as well. I windows recording mix board I choose for example LINE In for recording and than in playing mix board I choose LINE IN as well for monitoring.
This is too simple to be solution here obviously but sometimes the simple is the best.
If this is what you are looking for I can come with more details.

I assume You do, but in order to clear the issue I'll ask: while you register is the playback button pushed as well?

I am sorry but I really don't understand what do you mean with " While I register" and what play back button????
I never think about it: I trigger channel for recording and klick the Recording button on AA player. I play guitar and I hear it as well. I hear other previously recorded tracks too.
I can adjust volume level for monitoring of new track. Everything I do, I do on windows mix boards.
