hey everyone it's me again! it's been a while!

So i started recording today using my tascam 1641 interface, and i think that part went ok. the problem now is that when i go to playback my track, there's no noise coming through my headphones (actually no noise coming from ANYWHERE, not even my laptop speakers), which are hooked up to the phones jack on the tascam..

shouldn't i be able to hear the playback through that? or does it only work with monitors? All of this input/output stuff confuses me...

Oh, and p.s.-- i record with cubase, if that helps. and i don't have my monitors hooked up yet either...

Do you KNOW it went OK? ie. you can see in Cubase that you've actually recorded something that sort of looks like what you expect it might?

I don't know Cubase but I imagine you have to configure its outputs to point to whatever you're trying to listen on... it probably won't do it automatically.

Have you done this?

Do you see waveforms in Cubase after you stop recording? Have you setup the Tascam as your audio device? Does Cubase recognize the Tascam?

well the signal was a little weaker than i wanted it, but it was recording!

yeah, the waveforms are there (small, but there)...i set it up and i think cubase recognizes it. here's what i did--

Devices--Device Setup--VST audio system--and then selected US 1641 as my asio driver

however if i go down to VST system link (under US 1641), it has drop down bars for asio inputs and outputs, and both currently say "not connected", although i have the ability to select any of my sixteen inputs and any of my four direct outputs.

thanks for the help so far, everybody! :)

Is your track armed for playback? There should be a little speaker or something next to the record button on the track that should let you arm it for playback. Also check that it isn't muted, and that a blank track somewhere isn't solo'd.

Yeah, i think so. There's a "direct monitoring" button that i have activated when i play it back. Nothing is muted or soloed either...haha i'd feel stupid if that were the problem! though of course it probably is something silly like that.:(

We were all n00bs once..;)

Im right there with ya'

It seems so many people are experiencing this problem, including me. it's pretty frustrating when you've tried every possible solution  I messed around with the mono/stereo options, the VST outputs/inputs, NOTHING is working...and the annoying thing is you can see the sound waves that you recorded. So let me know if you ever fix this...

Gotta love thread resurrection.

You have to manually make the output paths in software. Especially in recording software. They default to mute and disconnected in a lot of circumstances because if they don't, you can get feedback issues. Which is not a great first impression for a lot of supposedly good software. All of which should be well documented in the help of or website for said software. Probably in the first couple of pages. i.e. getting started...

Worst case scenario you can sub in a headphone preamp where your monitors would be and listen with headphones as if the headphones were the monitors. And when multi-tracking, they will be for all intents.

VST system link should not be active. Leave that alone. Go to Devices/VST Connections and make sure output buss 1 and 2 are selected for the 1641. Headphone output of 1641 is supplied by them. Make sure the 'MIX' knob on front panel is turned clockwise to 'COMPUTER' for playback (turned left is for monitoring direct input) and turn up headphone volume. Also if you are using Cubase 5 or 6, in 'VST Connections' make sure that under 'Studio' tab, power button is switched off.

If that don't do it then go to Tascam site and download and update firmware and driver.

Product: US-1641 | TASCAM

Good luck!

Let me know how it goes.

Jimmy :D

Yeah, I didn't notice the date. Hopefully the OP has figured this out by now!
