Can't hear midi

Hi,

I'm new to the recording/midi world so I'm having some problems with my Presonus Firebox and Cakewalk Home Studio 2004. The audio is working fine, but I can't hear anything I do in midi.

I can record midi to a track. I know this because I can see the notes (data?) being sent and recorded to Cakewalk. I can't hear it going in or when I play it back. Note that I'm using a Korg N5 which is setup correctly as an instrument. i.e. I can change patches through the software so I know this to be true.

I've checked all of the midi settings and they appear to be set correctly to the Presonus midi in and out.

Any idea what might be causing this? I'd appreciate any input I can get on this.

Thanks

You need the audio outs of the N5 running into the Audio ins of the Firebox or you wont be able to hear it. MIDI just sends data, you still have to connect the audio.

Thanks for the feedback. I've tried using "midi omni" and "Channel 1" and various other channels all with the same result.

I'll try plugging in the audio of the N5 as well. I thought the audio and midi were completely separate. I have the midi out on the N5 going to the midi in of the firebox and vice versa with the midi in...

Thanks,

Also -

Very important if you're going to be using the same keyboard as a controller is to set the 'Local on/off' to the 'off' position.

This will break the connection between the keyboard and the sounds inside and will result in having a virtual midi controller and a virtual sound module --- inside of one box!

It will also help greatly to avoid midi feedback which will grind things to a halt double quick.

Another tip - avoid 'omni' mode if at all possible.

Here are links to two good articles on midi basics - part one and part two.

I've played music for about 22 years now, have recorded with Logic for about 4 years now, and still haven't figured out how to use midi to benefit me. Which is good, because I haven't the slightest idea how to hook the shit up.

Ignorance is nothing to be proud of.

Read the articles linked above. Maybe they'll help you too.

Thanks for posting these articles. I really appreciate it. I think it's time that I learn the basics at least.
