Hey I'm posting a screenshot that shows a few screens in cubase:
http://www.zacksdomain.com/weblinked/cubaseplayback.jpg

In this image, I have pressed play, you can see my system's output is through the onboard soundcard. You can see in cubase mixer that it is outputting a signal. The little buttons on the track seem right. But I can't hear anything!
It is not outputting to my Tascam either, I plug in my headphones and get nothing. I have no idea what cubase is "playing" through, but I've searched high and low and clicked every button, bar, and box and I just can't get the darn thing to play what I've recorded. That aught to be the most BASIC function it has! ARG!

I know it must be something simple, but I'm lost. How the heck can I hear anything in cubase?

Try pressing your monitor button on your track. Its the icon that is right under the zero in your track Audio 01. See if turning it on helps.

with in cubase. go to vst out's in the devices and see what out is it using.

Hmm, both of those posts lead to an interresting conclusion.

I just happen to have my laptop next to me by my desktop which I'm on now. The Tascam is NOT plugged in to the laptop. So I started up Cubase and it gave a message about ASIO driver and wanted to test a configuration, I said NO. It says this when the Tascam is not plugged in, but it's fine when it IS plugged in.

Anyway, I opened a project and started to play, and when I turned off monitoring, I could HEAR! FINALLY! (of course I had messed with these buttons 50 times before)
But I never had tried to listen with the Tascam unplugged (obviously it will not be unplugged under normal use).

So then I looked at the VST output and it had my onboard soundmax audio listed. HMMM, very interresting because I've been to this screen 10 times and it only EVER had the Tascam port in the list. And now that is unplugged, it has the soundmax in the list and it plays!

What do you suppose this means? Does cubase only allow one VST output at a time or something?

Thanks a million, hopefully this will be solved soon.
