I have an m-audio Audiophile 2496 and have just added a joe meek mq1 unit to work with an oktavamk319 microphone, but can't get any connections between them. No sound from the mic at all! I am trying to record with cubasis. Everything is installed correctly.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Make sure the mic is patched to the pre with a good XLR cable and you're not using any "adaptors" in line on it. Make sure the phantom power is switched on. The line output from the preamp should patch to one of the line inputs on the card. Make sure that input is selected in whatever sftware you're using and it should work.

Yeah - I have a good quality XLR mic cable and the phantom power is on. I have connections from the mq1 daughterboard to the soundcard - which work when my guitar is plugged into the main front input. (I know the XLR doesn't work with a jack plugged in the main drivebay unit.) I can't understand what the problem can be!

Is there any kind of metering on the Meek unit? Can you determine if it's making it at least that far?

Yes - the unit has LED indicator lights which work with the guitar, but don't respond at all when I turn the mic and phantom power on.

Either the phantom power on the meek is broken, or the XLR cable, or the mic itself. You need to find somebody that has all of these things in working condition to find out which doesn't work (like your local music equipment repair shop).

I suspected something was probably not as it should be - but was hoping I was just doing something wrong!
Thanks for your help anyway.
Cheers.

I just went to their website and looked this model over. It says it gets phantom power from the computer to supply to the mic. If you have a level from an instrument and not from the mic, I'd be suspicious of power reaching the mic or possibly a bad mic. Try a dynamic mic if you have access to one.

I have just tried a dynamic mic without the phantom power but with the same cable and the sound - though very quiet did get through.
When I plug in the oktava mic and switch it on there is a brief hiss and then silence!

Interesting. Since the Meek gets power from the computer, I wonder if it can get enough juice to run the mic. It's either that or the mic.
