ok, very dumb question. I have done this a millions times but something isnt working for me tonight. Not really a recording problem, but... Just rebuilt laptop.Trying to get internet connection. I open control panel, networks connection. Normally I would just right click on icon in box, go to properties etc. There is no freaking icon to click. I have tried new connection but nothing. What am I doing wrong? Am i fried?

Go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager

Make sure your NIC is showing up and working properly. May be a driver issue.

That si what I suspected, no NIC in device manager. How would I get drivers for that?

Fuck the internet/

It's one of AlGore's worst inventions.

Call the DMV :D

OK... go to the internet site of the manufacturer of your laptop.

Look for Support/Download section.

Most of them now allow end users to type in the model name of their computer which will take them to the driver downloads page for it.

Download the NIC drivers for it, on the computer that you're getting the internet on.

Copy said drivers to a CD or USB thumb drive.

Insert the disc or the thumbdrive into the NIC-less laptop.

Install driver... usually it will be some kind of an executable

If it's not an executable (.exe file), then you can do it fom the device manager.

Open up the device manager, in there it will still recognise that you have some sort of a NIC except it will have a yellow warning icon telling you it's acting a bit goofy cuz it doesn't know who it is.

Right click, go to Properties, select drivers tab (I think... too lazy to doublecheck).

Click on update drivers

In the dialog box asking where the drivers are, point to the location they're in (USB thumb drive, CD, some folder on your disk... in short wherever you put them in).

Click Open or Install or something like that.

Reboot

Should be done

If you can't get it working and you're in the Los Angeles area, IM me, and I'll do it for you at $125 an hr. (minimum 1 hr charge) :D

ok, now in device manager I do not see any NIC at all, I thought I did before with a big yellow question mark. I had tried to rollback drivers, but with no drivers thats a bit hard. Where the heck is the NIC

i DID LOOK BEFORE AND THERE WERE NO DRIVERS AT ALL.i HAVE DOWNLOADED THE "CORRECT' DRIVERS INTO THE LAPTOP BUT i NEED TO UPDATE THE nic DRIVERS

If there a yellow question mark in the device manager? You would expect to see this if there was hardware detected that the kernel couldn't match to a driver. If so, right click and select "Update driver" and run it from there.

If not, replace the nic.

Did I really imply that WinbloZ has a kernel?

There was a yellow?, now I cant find anything in device manager for a NIC?
WTF?Is it under something else?

If there is a yellow exclamation point next to it in the device manager then the drivers apparently aren't compatible with whatever version of Windows you're using. I've had this happen to me a lot.

You'll need to go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers or try the windows update. If you don't know the manufacturer then look through all the old CDs/floppies you have to see if you can find the driver CD.

If that fails, you may have to open it up and write down some numbers.

I don't have any experience with laptops so I'm not really sure how hard it would be to replace the NIC. They do sell separate network cards for laptops though, and they're pretty cheap.

Thanks all. well, no cd's.I just got it off ebay for 75 bucks, no OP.I just wanted it to see my GPS better in the boat. I agree, it seems no drivers. It used to be windows 98 but I have installed xp. I decided to just get a freakin wireless card and it fine now. Kind of cool, after 75 bucks for laptop,$55 for 512 memory, $45 for new battery and $87 for 120 gig hard drive I have PRETTY GOOD LITTLE LAPTOP, WORKS WELL.
