That si what I suspected, no NIC in device manager. How would I get drivers for that?
Call the DMV
OK... go to the internet site of the manufacturer of your laptop.
Look for Support/Download section.
Most of them now allow end users to type in the model name of their computer which will take them to the driver downloads page for it.
Download the NIC drivers for it, on the computer that you're getting the internet on.
Copy said drivers to a CD or USB thumb drive.
Insert the disc or the thumbdrive into the NIC-less laptop.
Install driver... usually it will be some kind of an executable
If it's not an executable (.exe file), then you can do it fom the device manager.
Open up the device manager, in there it will still recognise that you have some sort of a NIC except it will have a yellow warning icon telling you it's acting a bit goofy cuz it doesn't know who it is.
Right click, go to Properties, select drivers tab (I think... too lazy to doublecheck).
Click on update drivers
In the dialog box asking where the drivers are, point to the location they're in (USB thumb drive, CD, some folder on your disk... in short wherever you put them in).
Click Open or Install or something like that.
Reboot
Should be done
If you can't get it working and you're in the Los Angeles area, IM me, and I'll do it for you at $125 an hr. (minimum 1 hr charge)
