wheres the other 2 in's? i only see the 2 on it. the 2 Neutrik Combo XLR/1/4 plugs are all i see. are the other 2 line ins? can you adjust them sepatatly?

things like that confuse me. it says its 4 but i only see 2.

It looks like they're giving you 2- 1/4" ins and a s/pidf in, which is the 2 more to equal 4. I would go with Deepwaters advice, I can almost guarantee that after you have the 4, something will come up and you'll need more.

I can never understand why some cards have so many outs and so few ins.

I had the same dilemma as yourself. I ended up with buying the M Audio delta 1010, i never thought i would need all 10 tracks, until the day a band asked me to record them playing live. Thats when it came in handy with micing up the full drum kit, 2 guitars, bass and 2 vocals.

Good luck :)

i would get something bigger but i dont wanna spend much more and im just starting out. if i need something bigger i'll get it later, but i'll mostly be just recording myself.

so whats a "s/pidf in" ? can i use it just like the other 2 ins?

like i just need a sound card i can plug 4 balanced 1/4" trs cables into and be able to get each one individual to the computer.

spdif is digital I/O - no use for recording mics or line level signals.

The advantage of the Presonus unit is that it comes with a preamp on each input channel so you don't need to buy a mixer. For $600 it's a pretty good deal

With the Delta 1010 where are the ten inputs? What kind of inputs are they? How do you hook mics up to them?

Click here, the box on the bottom has 8x8 individual 1/4" analog I/O connections, balanced or unbalanced,
+4/-10 operation, individually switchable on the external rackmount unit, then that breakout box is connected to your computer's PCI card by a cable. To connect a mic cable you'd need some of these The other 2 are s/pidf. For more info on s/pidf click here .

so what should i get?

i still really dont understand what i should get. i need something with 4 preamps and 4 mic/intrument/line in's that is firewire. i can only find that but in 8 ins. or in 4 but 2 of them are s/pdif or midi ins.

i dont want something thats 8 ins cuz im not looking to spend 800 dollars right now.

please help

You can find them on ebay for less than MF.

You'd be better off getting outbord pre-amps and a line level soundcard. The pre's in "all-in-one" soundcards range from so-so to decent. Either way, you don't want to skimp on your converters. Better to save up and get something good than to buy cheap now and then buy again later.
