Can't configure Midi Ports

Help, help, help please...

This seems like a simple request, but I have been stumped by this problem. :(

I open up Cakewalk 9. I close my Tip for the Day. then CW9 tells me to Choose Midi ports Now or Continue With No Midi Ports.

OK, simple enough.

I proceed to press Choose Midi Ports Now, and it displays

INPUT PORTS:
TTS Virtual
Generator internal Midiport

OUTPUT PORTS:
Midi Mapper
SB Audio PCI 64V Midi Synth
Generator Synthesizer

If I choose all of them or just one (1) of each (I/O).
It locks my computer up (CW9 Not Responding).

Or if I choose CONTINUE WITH NO MIDI OUTPUT my computer will lock up (CW9 Not Responding) once I try to exit CakeWalk 9.

This is some added information, I have a

PIII
833mhz
256MB ram
133bus
7200rpm HD
SB64 sound card
Delta 66 sound card

I would greatly appreciate any help that could be given to me for this problem. :)

Hmmmm Interesting - I'd go to my control panel and check that the soundcards are installed correctly. Cake could be having trouble distiguishing your two audio cards, Try disabling one of them maybe and try again.

I just got in from deejaying, it's about 4:30 am in Chi-town, so i will try to do what you suggested once I get up.

Yea, about 20 degrees and snowin' too.

Looks like you got a software synth on board, try to keep him out of the picture for now. You want to concentrate on configuring the soundblaster ports, there should be at least three different sb midi i/o ports - 2 for internal sounds and another for an external keyboard, the latter being the mu401 port.

Should I uninstall it?

I would probably try to uninstall the Delta 66, because the Sound Blaster came pre-installed on the computer.

Alright, Bball, I had to shovel my snow before I got on this BBS. :)

Midi is my gray area when it comes to production, so treat me like the "newbie" that I am.

The software synth I presume is the Virtual Piano or is it the SB midi synth?

How do I configure the Soundblaster ports?
I don't see the three different midi i/o ports.

Please, keep in mind that "midi anything" is not my strong point, because I have not had a need to use it (midi).

But...now, I am sure I need to learn (at least the simply aspects of it).

Ok spinstur we'll take it easy on ya,

Click start, settings, control panel. After the control panel opens up you will see several different icons. Look for the one that says audio or something (I'm on 2000 now and it is all different). Click on this and you will see a box with different tabs, one for audio, midi etc. From here you can make adjustments to audio/wave soundcard settings, midi settings etc. Go to your midi tab and define you midi i/o. I recommend same in and out for starters. From here it may take a little fiddling to see which settings will make your sound card perk.

There are gonna be some variables like, is there a keyboard involved or no? If not, do you have a midi file to play? If you have a midi file to play, open CW and and load it.

Everything you said worked out my problem just fine.

For anyone who has this problem or is/was just as confused as I am/was about midi, this is what I did....

press START
goto SETTINGS
press CONTROL PANEL icon
press MULTIMEDIA Icon
press the DEVICES tab not the MIDI tab
press MIDI DEVICES AND INSTRUMENTS
(I highlighted my GENERATOR SYNTHESIZER)yours will probably be or say something different.
then press the Proprties Tab
then check the DO NOT USE MIDI FEATURES ON THIS DEVICE
then APPLY
then RESTART your computer

then........VOILA, TRES MANIFIQUE!!!

The problem is solved. :)

No more lock ups and I can set my midi ports.
