Here's a post mainly for Aussie readers

Somewhere along the line somebody is pocketing a s#&@ load of money! I'm sick and tired of seeing goods in Australia costing over 4 times what you pay in the States! I'm definately not USA bashing here, in fact I'm sure the problem is at the Australian end.

Case in point. I'm in the market for a pair of reference monitors. I'm reading some good things about the JBL LSR25Ps, and I find that you can buy a pair in the States at the moment for about $500. I think this price sounds great. Double that for Aussie Dollars, add about 30% for taxes, import duties freight etc. and I would expect to pay about $1300 Aussie a pair. The JBL importers/distributors for Australia is Jands Electronics. I go to there website, look up the LSRs and there's the Recommended Retail Price of...... wait for it......... $1500 EACH!!!!! For that price I'll buy them from the States, get them sent over and who cares about the warranty!

What the F%#@ is going on here. Who's making lots of money here at our expense? I can assure you it's not the dealer who sells it to you. I'd be pretty sure it's the importer.

The other thing is that this is not always the case. I've come across many items that have a price much more in line with the American equivalent.

If anyone can give me an acceptable reason why this happens I'll shut up. If not... I'll keep shouting.

Same thing goes for Estonia.
I wanted to buy the Terratec EWS88MT card, we have an authorized dealer here, the price for it was $530 so I ordered it from Germany where the price is $370 including the shipping.
Cann't wait for it to get here.

Oz I guess your not in kansas anymore

If you ever travel to the states come to kansas, Its the home of the musicians friend clearence center. I swear they are the best prices on this earth.

Mark,

Maybe it's time the manufacturers were contacted and asked if they can help explain this phenomenon. I am looking at near-fields at the moment and have noticed the same thing with Event monitors.

The only possible explanation I can think of is that because the Aust. market is only relatively small compared to the US, that distributors in the US not only save on shipping, but also get better discounts due to the volume they purchase.

I will think it out over a few beers tonight while I enjoy Floyd Vincent and The Childbrides at a local watering hole.

It's time we learned why Aussie prices are so high and why so many
hot actresses and supermodels come from Down Under!

You got what u deserved

No appology forthcoming!
When u embrace a complete loony like "the crocodile hunter" as has the U.S. , what do you expect.
Did you realise that no-one here in Aust. had heard of him till he got onto U.S. Tv !!!
Besides, Paul Hogan was a real funny bugger before he made Croc. Dundee. (Well in the old days he was...)

Some prices in Oz.......

I hear you, but how many quotes did you get? a price difference is normal but not to that degree........maybe the sales guy was confused (not that THAT's ever happened before....................)

Reason stuff CAN SOMETIMES cost more down here:
1. Shipping and assoc. costs
2. Buffer for protecting on exchange rate fluctuations
3. Smaller market + higher business operating costs
4. Sales guys pulling a swiftie

HOWEVER!!!!!

I just got back from a trip to the UK and found that pricing down here isn't too bad. True, when you walk in the store here the price tags can be daunting, and if the sales guy thinks you look rich or has made his target for the quarter he'll pretty much stick to the price. Most of the time they drop 15% off the minute you ask about some thing, and if you haggle you'll find you can get anywhere from 20% to 30% off the list. If you're getting it under finance don't let them pull the line on you "but it's only an extra five bucks a month".....it's still your dough at the end of the day, PLUS the interest you pay to the finance company.

Just make sure you get quotes form different stores because I've noticed a lot of them will stick 20% on the RRP and try to negotiate down from that. Contact the comapny in by phone or email for the RRP so you know what the starting point should be.

Best time to buy is on the last business day of the month.....specifically last business day in June (end of financial year!!!!!!!). Christmas not so good because lots of people are buying stuff so there meeting sales targets.

Happy mixing!

Ben,

Care to share the name of retailers who are bumping the RRP up?

Alternatively, if you see a price that you suspect to be over the RRP, ring the distributors and tell them.

Peace........ChrisO

Ben
I got the RRP from the Distributor's (Jands) website and it was confirmed by a good friend who runs a pro A/V consultancy business. The best he can do for me is $1250 a piece, and I know he wouldn't rip me off. That is still $250 more for one unit than it would cost me for a pair from the States. Now I'm not in any way disagreeing with your points, but nobody can tell me that the difference can be that great!
peace

I totally agree with you Ben - do you know that Rode mics are more expensive in OZ where they are made than in the US.

I'd check out the price at Turramurra Music in Sydney before buying anything. Ron will beat any price hands down.

BTW - I've seen the Crocodile Hunter for the first time since I've come back from the outback and????????..........I think he's great!!! He sure has a way with animals.

yeha prices suck! did a comparison b/w a u.s. mag and an aussie mag, and it would appear our dollar is now (according to these prices) worth about $0.30c u.s.
