Can you transfer tape from 10.5" to 7" reels?

Any easy way to do that if you don't have a machine that can load a 10.5" reel?

I'd imagine it's possible but you'll need to make up some sort of "reel table" on the side of the deck and an improvised 3" "adaptor".

got me thinking about what would be the easiest way to do this without building some sort of "device", so I've decided to try this "system" :D ..and it works, BUT there are some issues to think about.
To begin with you'd need to have the box with that center-cup and you need to have a deck that you can place horizontally. You can take that cardboard with the cup out of the box and place it next to deck and level it with "tape path", and you need to fix it down somehow so it does not slide away (actually I just placed CD-case between the boxes and the deck (so it works as "stopper" :) )

Now, there is a certain amount of friction there as the flange actually is "sliding" on the surface of the cardboard. I think if you unscrew and remove the flanges so you get just pancake, then I assume (I have not tried it) it will "spin" much easier, less work for motor and less tape stress.

Here, I've made a short video clip in "action": http://www.mzentertainment.com/video/10_inch_to_7_inch.wmv

also keep in mind, that as you don't have 10" machine, then as you start winding you will not have any mechanism available to "undo" it, so it's one shot one way ticket :D

That was very innovative. I only have one question, wouldn't you want a little drag on the reel on the left to make sure the tape is not sloppy once it reaches the take up reel, or in this case the new supply reel? Just a thought.

This should do nicely...

there was planty of "drag" in my "prototype" heh heh, you can hear it too on the video.
I'd say, the whole point here is to somehow succefully wind tape to a 7", then you wind it from that 7" to another and/or later even play-mode-wind for perfection.

This "method" seems to be useful if you only have/use 7" machine(s) and get some pancake tapes for cheap :p.

Silly, thing, I was facing similar situation few weeks ago. I have couple 10" reel machines but I sold adaptors while ago, because I happen never use 10" reels.
Then I've got few 10" reels and some pancakes, so I wanted to get the tapes. This "idea" would work, but then I did not think of this and the first thing came to my mind was to make the damn adaptors. So I did, and the DIY-adaptors worked pretty well. It was a piece of work and pain in the neck to make, I must say. I actually made another pair later. See picture attached.

(I have bunch of detailed photos about how to make those, maybe someday I'll find time to put it all together for demonstration for DIY-heads.)

actually, if you don't have that box with cup, you can simply place reel (or just hub with tape with no flangers) on a nice flat surface, level it with tape path of the deck, then stick something "nice" into the hole, does not need to be perfectly 3", beer bottle should do, also you'd need to hold it in place while winding, so it will not be a hand-free operation :D.
I've got no beer :( , just bunch of empty cans :

Then maybe you could put the reel and the beer can inside an 11" pizza carton with a slot cut in the side for the tape to go through (the one that you just ate while drinking the beer) and it'd be all good to go?

It'd even smell good while it went round and round in there unravelling away - especially if you've got anchovies....
