Slowing becoming un-noob.
It's a Gretsch. That's all i know. It's a neck through, pretty sweet bass in my opinion. I dig it. But I'd sure like to know how much it's worth and maybe just what kind it actually is. I can't find it anywhere on the net.

My buddies and I got this for free from our school. Had it for a good 3 years now.
I just really want to know this stuff about it.

Thanks guys!

It looks like a model 7629 Committee Bass from the late '70s or early '80s

I found this about Gretsch serial numbers from that period.

1973 to 1981 Serial numbers.
Hyphenated number impressed into back of peghead.
1 or 2 digits before hyphen = month (1-12).
First digit after hyphen = last digit of year.
Last 3 digits = rank of instrument.
Example:
10-5155 = October 1975, 155th instrument.
4-622 = April 1976, 22nd instrument.

This model is not particularly collectable, but it has an interesting tone and should be great fun. My guess is it's worth about $400 if it's as clean as it looks. Great get.

I like the reversed inlay:D

I'd love to know what you find out.

Milnoque, do you have any links to any early Fernandes guitars sites by chance? I have an older Fernandes Strat copy that plays like a dream and was trying to find a manufacture date, but I've had no luck so far.

It's like, you can never satisfy these people!!!

I'm sorry to say I don't. If I get time I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Meanwhile we'll throw it out there. Some smart folks in here.

Peghead? :o

Found the serial and model numbers inside the guitar with the electronics.

Model number: 7629
Serial number: 3-9060

So, March 1979, 60th instrument.

COOL!! My brain always tells me a '79 is ten years older than an '80

I'm happy to see you kept the neck. Those old Fernandes are becoming a niche market for collectors. Restoring the guitar to original may be worth the cost of a replacement truss rod.

The body style on the Gretsch bass makes me think of a solid body version of the old Kustom guitars and basses from the late 1960s--I'd love to find one of those in a garage sale or pawn shop.

Back to the Gretsch--I notice they are recycling the body design for the Electromatic Corvette guitar.
