Soundcard. Absolutely.

You WILL need an impedance converter unless your soundcard has an XLR in - they're only $20 or so.

I have a UB1002, it would really only serve to add noise, IMO. I only use it for monitoring and live sound reinforcement.

Woah!!!!!!!!! You can plug a dynamic mic directly into a soundcard without a preamp, buy only if you want it to sound horrible.

Try it, since you've already got that, but between impedance mismatch and the horrific signal to noise ratio, it will sound pathetic.

Put all mics into a preamp before the sound card. You need this to convert the impedance and to boost the signal so that it is strong enough to overwhelm your noise floor.

Trust me on this...

As for Derek's comments,

I am a middle aged white guy with two kids in college. I'm an upper management professional in the IT sector. I was raised on the Beatles, Motown and Bebop jazz.

I think hip hop is an absolutely valid form of music. Like all popular music, a lot of it is crap, but that doesn't mean that Dre, Snoop, Eminem and Outkast aren't making some cool music.

It's not in my heavy rotation (that'd be Radiohead, XTC, Thelonius Monk, Flaming Lips and White Stripes).

Sorry you're shutting yourself out of entire genres.

Derek - Good luck with that not-a-funky-bone-in-your-body thing.

It's a shame some of us can be closed minded like that.
