I am basically tired of paying for studio time so I am trying to convert my studio apartment into an audio studio.

I plan on recording mostly hip hop with some R&B choruses and stuff like that.

My budget is tight right now so I am trying to spend as little as possible without really compromising quality (isn't that most starving artists' problem?)

The distance from the pc to the bathroom is approximately 20-30 feet.

My computer is a 2.4Ghz Celeron
256 MB DDR Ram
I have the soundcard that came with my computer...I really can't afford another one just yet.

I am also looking into getting the Studio Projects B1 mic/preamp bundle...I also need to know if that would be a wise choice for two hundred.

One more thing is that I want to purchase some headphones to wire into the bathroom/mic booth for the person listening...what should I buy and where do I plug in those headphones?

I know this may be a little ambitious but I want to start recording in a month...CAN ANY OF YOU HELP A MUSICIAN IN NEED????

I am a newbie so please be patient with me.

Well there goes a taste of what has been going through my mind for the last two weeks. Any kind helpers are really appreciated. I would like to thank y'all ahead of time for even listening to me vent. PEACE!

......Keygen (What do I have?????).....

Pirated software is frowned upon at this site (and most other sites).

Stating that you have a keygen is informing other members that you have illegal programs.

I am sure that you didn't know these things, so beware of the information that you share.

You still will need to purchase a soundcard....

Check out this Delta 2496 card

http://www.midiman.net/products/m-audio/audiophile.php

It about $200.00 USD

You'll need to buy a converter cable 1/4" female stereo to RCA male left AND right.

If you are REALLY on a squeeze budget, you can opt to not buy the soundcard, then you can buy a cable that goes from 1/4" female stereo to 1/8" male stereo (use the LINE IN not the MIC IN).

Peace....

THANKS

Give us a link to this product.

So...what do you think?

Would that combo make good option for hip hop/ R&B recording?

That combo would probably work pretty well, depending on the character of the voices you want to record.

I would also highly recommend getting a dynamic mic, such as a Shure SM58 (around $100). There are times when it is just a better option than the top of the line vintage tube Neumann, especially for high-volume singers.

Yes, that would be a good combo for you.

However, I feel the same was as Todzilla, you would be better off using a Shure SM58.

That's vital if you happen to eat at Taco Bell before recording.

Important rule for newbies. Ignore Derek Verner. He is an idiot and a sociopath.

On to your question:

You can't skimp on the soundcard --- the Audiophile 2496 or the SB Audigy (careful you get a good model) are about the minimum you can get away with.

OTOH, there is plenty of freebie software - sequencers, wav editors, soft synths, soft samplers, etc. Check out
http://www.computermusic.co.uk/main.asp
and click on "CM Studio" for free downloadable fully functional software. Plenty of other good free sites, too. No need to steal software.

SP B-1 is a good'n, but I'd start with an SM-57.

Good luck,

Daf

I hope no one responds to this DUMB-ASS statement. (besides me)

That is a matter of taste but anyone can see you are an idiot and a sociopath.

If I do decide to go with the Shure SM58, what preamp would be best to purchase? Most of the tracks we record are pretty mellow and smooth. I do not plan on yelling into the mic.

Regarding the hip hop as real music question...I think I will let a quote by Andre 3000 from 'Humble Mumble' on the Stankonia album reflect my opinion:

"You're living for the lotto and will never hit it,
I met a critic I made her sh*t her draws
She said she tought Hip Hop was only guns and alcohol
I said "Oh hell naw!" but yet it's that too
You can't discrimahate because you done read a book or 2
What if I looked at you in a microscope saw all the dirty organisms
Living in your closet would I stop and would I pause it "whoo"

Peace

preamp?

Would the Behringer EURORACK UB802 work out for me? If I get that with the Shure SM-58 microphone would I get the right bang for my buck?

Oh Yeah, is there really that big a difference between the Shure SM-57 and the SM-58? I was thinking go with the 58 because it looks more sturdy but I really do not know the difference.

And a big thank you to everyone who replied to my thread...I learned sooooo much in like three days.

57 / 58 = same electronics, different body. 57 is more versatile for recording, and cheaper. 58's better for live vocals, partly due to the recessed capsule. This is less of an advantage in the studio, and actually a disadvantage for things like amp and percussion miking (which the 57 does VERY well).

You can do ANYTHING reasonably well with a 57. A 58 is more specialized.

57s and 58s don't require a preamp at all - I would only use one if would actually improve the sound --- and the preamps that do that are out of your price range now.

If you go with a condensor like a B1 or C1, you'll need a pre-amp --- so this may be yet another reason to start with a 57.

dafduc just saved me a couple of bucks

So I can connect the 57 directly to the computer (using the right wires of course). You mean to tell me that with just that I can record vocals? Will the sound coming from the mic be strong enough for recording without a pre amp?

So...what do you suggest I get with the other $150 I have to spend? I wanted to get a midi keyboard, but everyone keeps telling me to go for a sound card. Would you agree with the keyboard or soundcard or do you have another suggestion?
