I've always liked the tapped-out intro to Women In Love (VanHalen II). Also, I think that part in Light Up The Sky where Eddy & Dave break-it-down is really cool. Its not tapping but it kind of grabs me by the booboo and just makes me want to play my guitar. That's what good music does!
I am not sure about Yngwie, I think his was all finger stretches and sweep picking. Randy Rhoads was fantastic and a tragic loss. The solo to "Flying High Again" is some cool tapping. Wasnt it that Metal Method guy that would advertise playing his axe upside down?? I used to hate when groups like Briney Fox would swing their guitars over their shoulders and catch them. What a damn waste of time. I hated to see Cinderella do all of that glam crap because they were and AWSOME blues rock band!!!
Getting back on the subject though, the first tapping that I can recall hearing was from Ace Frehley. On Kiss Alive II he does a solo after Shock Me where he is doing some tapping, not fast like EVH did it but still...Ted Nugent used some tapping techniques back in the 70's to create artificial harmonics. Eddie really brought it to the masses back in '78.
And I've seen Brian May do his share of tapping here and there in a very tasteful and discrete manner; back many years ago. Billy Gibbons and Steve Howe ROCK!!!! But, IMHO, Steve Lynch, tapping-wise, does circles around them. Reb Beach was another tap monster. I wonder what he's been up to lately.
