Can you check my lows?

hi, folks


I am working on this new tune here, and I am having a pretty tough time getting the bass right. I want a rich tone that actually stands out in the mix, and not blurring the mix meanwhile.


Some specs:
I looked at "Hey you" of P. Floyd under spectrum analyzer, and kinda modeled my bass frequencies outta that. Heavy lowcut below 30, mild lowcut at 125, carved out some db at 200hz with a small band. Does that sound about right??

This is still an early stage of mixing, so, excuse the rough mix.

I think the bass sounds good.. The only problem I can hear would maybe be some minor bass performance issues, but the overall sound of it in the mix is good imop..

should be a good tune!
 
Is this two parts of the same song? The first 20 seconds sounded a lot different than the second part to me. I'm strictly talking about the bass here since thats what you were asking about. I liked the first 20 seconds better. It had punch and definition and still had enough low freq. content. The second section sounded much brighter to me. More of a slap bass tone. And while some notes were fine, others were hard to make out. Just my .02.
I liked the guitar sounds by the way.

JUST TO CONFUSE THINGS...lol

I personally preferred the bass tone and levels in the second part. However, I'll say that, for the song, the tone in the first :20 seconds works better for me...but the level seems too low...I listened on monitors that have no response below 50Hz, but I had the same complaint on headphones. It's a softer tone, so maybe that's why I just want it louder...Also, when I turned up the mix REALLY loud (which is the only way I know how to check bass), it was missing some of that overall low end surrounding "warmth," for lack of any actual term. The cuts you made are the same ones I usually make, but you might think about throwing some of the 125Hz back in...maybe...maybe not, lol. Either that, or just bump it up a couple of db?

I played the first 20secs with my right hand thumb only, maybe that's why it's more consistent and richer compare to the second half.

So, does anyone else think it's too bassy or too thin?

I also liked the first part better....the bass had more definition. They both sounded good but, to me, the second one was too 'round' sounding. It needed some punch. The first one had that.

...Im not gonna be any help at all man ....sorry. these speakers here at work have absolutely NO decent low end.
.....so why the fuck did you reply then G? :D ...well, just wanted to check out what a brutha was working on.:) .....sounds like its gonna be nice too!
 
I'd try putting your 200Hz back where you found it, and instead of ditching all that low end, try maybe boosting around 1K and around 6K. It doesn't sound bad at all...just sounds like just a little more low end was taken out of it than necessary. Maybe. Could be my monitors too. Might sounds perfect on a home system.
 
I liked the tone of the first example, maybe add a little more upper mids to it as well. I also like the tone of the 2nd example, but as Sluice said you will need to replace some of the bass and low mids.
Playing with your thumb or finger in a traditional style will most often shelve high end harmonics by the mute factor of such a large strinking surface and the length of time its in contact with the string. Using a pick or thumping or slapping allows the high end to resonate more from less surface contact and duration of contact and the low end is not as dominate, so it must be enhanced. Then they came out with the equalizer , and your having fun with that. :)
