Heather, I just bought an ART Tube MP and a 58. $75 used for the MP. Coming from a Samson (junk) mic using the pres on a berhringer mixer, this combination sounds really nice vocally. Much cleaner and less distortion on the bottom end.

Anyway, I went from barrel bottom to the upper crust of the low range and I'm pretty impressed.

Welcome and good luck.

what is your $$$ budget for the mic and pre?.....you may be able to do better than what you are getting....

Vocal Pre-amp

What Gidge said is a very good choice , and any more expensive gear will just be better, .....

I have seen several small bands, that are very 'tone' conscious use the Art Tube MP and with great results.....

And of course the shure 57s, and 58s are pretty much standard fare for the music pros. You can't go wrong with a combo of those two things.

What are you doing,?? Recording, or performing live shows..??

Most of what you will see when you go to a Rock&Roll show, at least for 'Wired' mics is the 57s for micing amps, and 58s for vocals.

There are better choices for recording, but more expensive as well.... Go to the Microphone forum, and read a few of the threads there, it will give you a little more insite as to what to use for what purpose.

Have fun...!!!

If you want the best, look up Martinsound.com. I don't have one but it is top of the line.

I use the ART dual channel mic pre. It is a pretty good tool for the money but you need to work with it to get the best results and that means, practice, practice, and record, mix, record, change the reverb settings, etc.

If you can try or audition a unit, you will be ahead of the game.
