 i just got my first mic today and i cant get it to work..its an audio techinica at2020..i have an m audio ultra interface..i have no mixet..and i have a magomi xlr cable..if any one is familiar with nuendo 3 or just can plain out help me ..please do

all of your questions will be answered in your owner's manuals.

your interface will tell you how to connect a condensor mic and to turn on phantom power in the interface.

your interface may also tell you how to set it up for recording in your recording program.

and your recording program will tell you how to record a track from a correctly configured interface.

Go through the "getting started" or "quick start" sections of your manuals and try again, slowly.

first time I did any of this I already had a lot of analog recording skills and I was teaching myself without sites like gearslutz to help me out. I worked it out and am more knowledgeable today because I spent the time trying and trying again until I finally learned how to make digital gear operate like analog gear, and how to embrace the differences when possible.

Cheers and good luck to you (I mean that seriously, I know it's lots of work, but I think it's wrong for us to tell you how to do everything that you paid big money for when part of what you paid for is the instructions for use and support from the manufacturers).

thats the thing..this M udion only tells you how to install on the manual...and i dont have the nuendo manual..i can see a signal moving when i go into the interface..but dont know how to get a signal in nuendo..any idea?..and thanks for the response

I sympathize with you, Black7Knight, and can sense your frustration. One manual may tell you how to use that piece of gear, but it may not say anything that can help you understand another. Take "Phantom Power," for instance. Most manuals will tell you how to access PP from that gear, but some don't tell you exactly what PP is, or how it's used, or what other piece of gear would require it. (Your AT2020 does, indeed, need phantom power.)

One other thing- perhaps you have installed Nuendo, but have not configured it/your computer to receive input from FT Ultra? You might have to consult yet another manual- the one for your computer.

Shooting from the hip, here, I'd say that you may have neglected to turn PP on the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra (that IS what you mean by "Ultra," right?). Turn it on- switch on the back- and plug your AT2020 into one of the XLR connections on the front. Your cable should be fine for that connection. If it still does not do anything, I'd suspect that one of those devices- FT Ultra, cable, or AT2020- is defective.

...and i dont have the nuendo manual..

Getting Started Manual: ftp: (forward slash twice) ftp.steinberg.net/Download/Nuendo_3/Docs_English/Getting_Started.pdf

Here is the manual that I found for the Nuendo 3:

Hope it helps.

Nobody's joking. You are using expensive software with cheap hardware, you have no manual and no clue about routing in a DAW. You fit the profile perfectly. Saying stuff like "it's all good" practically clinches it. But I'm willing to be convinced otherwise given reason to do so. Meanwhile...no soup for you!
