Can someone please explain (or link to FAQ) compressors, FX modules?

I was wondering what all the fancy rack mount stuff really does? I don't know anything about compressors or rack modules like a nanoverb or that kind of stuff. Is there a good place I could read up on all the tweaking hardware and what it does?
