Can someone help me with a Fostex D-80?

I am new to digital recording and trying to learn how to use a Fostex D-80 by reading the manual. And in doing so, it seems to raise more questions about application than the operators manual answers. Is there anyone out there with some D-80 experience that would be willing to walk me through understanding this machine?

From what I have read the manual is garbage. If you have a PC made in the past 5 years you probably have a better recording device than the D-80 which uses 18 bit sampling with 8 mono tracks. You can get an 8-channel USB mixer for around $300 that will record 24bit direct to your hardrive.
