Oh REALLY????
by using good pre-amps? here's the idea if i bought a aark24 with SNR (A/D) of 104 and had a good pre amp (mackie?) would the SNR improve?

thanx guhlenn

As far as I know, the gear with the lowest SNR will always be the bottleneck and thus, your SNR won't improve. 104dB isn't too bad though...

/Ola

actually i got the idea from you as you mentioned the ADC had better SNR due to better surounding hardware (the ad converter was the same...

guhlenn

True, but the lower SNR will unfortunatley not improve unless you actually upgrade the surrounding electronics that has the lowest SNR. The converters (AKM 4524) probably have very low SNR themselves and are used in lots of soundcards, e.g. Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96, Terratec EWS88MT and Delta 66 if my memory servers me right. /Ola

Still, 104dB is pretty darn good.

yeah, i got to the conlusion of 104 being pretty good too. BUT (there's always a but(t)) ah you know, it's the fear of being backdated 2 months after i buy... ah well, my two solutions are:1/ go the inexpensive route and buy a second hand reasonable good card with a mixer and hope for the best
2/ get that hoontech and hope it's everything they say it is...

lots of money can be lost here...

would you by any chance know (and this is totally out of this subject) if a live mixer i.e. with two master outputs, can be modified to give separate channel outputs?

just asking ;)

thanx ola, you haven't got anything better to do also? or are you plain addicted?

:);):);)

If you cannot accept that, stay away from computers.

The best is if you can try them first, as always.

Do you mean splitting a stero output into two mono? If so, it's a piece of cake. You need a Y-cable that has a stereo plug in one end and two mono in the other end(s). Stereo ground goes to both mono grounds, left signal to one of the mono signals and right stereo signal to the other. You can get cables like these at any hifi shop but building your own get you the right connectors without a series of adapters.

No and yes.

ok. i guess it's always better to try first and i'm backdating (= a word? i don't think so) as we speak.

what i ment: use the mixers 8 channels to connect seperatly to the inputs of a soundcard. ie a live mixer becomes a studio mixer.

have fun doing nothing, i enjoy myself most when i've got nothing to do! ;)

guhlenn

as in per channel? that not that's why i'm asking...
only the main stereo out. but i thought that i can open it up and add 'm myself, if you mean something else please tell me i don't really understand...

I get it now. Sorry.

You can probably take it apart and follow the circuits from the inputs to where they're mixed into the main output and add "direct outs" there. Most probably just after the fader. You can probably kiss your master out if you go for this. Giving a general DYI instruction for that is rather impossible but I'd love to try on a mixer. Just bring it over and I'll see what I can do...

If you try it, get an old power amp or whatever that accepts line-in and try your new outputs on it before feeding the signal to your soundcard. And don't get yourself killed.

/Ola

ok! i'll try not to die (that rhymes!)

but i'll try it.

thanx guhlenn

i myself am not good at all...

but i've got an uncle who's an engineer. (AHA!)

another option would be to use the mixer with a sB16 value (yes, i mean the crappy sound blaster). just to get some experience while saving money for a decent card.

are there compatibility problems there? (ie using a 6 year old SB and a PIII?
