Can I use the digital out on the audiophile for speakers or headphones?

'about says it all really, and if not what is a digital out for?

to use the digital out on any soundcard, you will need to get a digital to analog converter, unless you are just transferring data via digital-digital. Spdif has nothing to do with midi.

hi,
im in the exact position as you. looking to buy 2496 but not sure. but the headphone issue should be possible to solve. at least my speakers have just a regular single direct out plug (just like on your headphone) and so has my headphones so im thinking ill just buy a cord that has two RCA plugs in one end that i plug into the stereo out of the soundcard and then has a thing in the other end where i can plug in a headphone plug. then i can just switch back and forth between speaker and headphone. but this is just what im thinking. but it should work. cause i dont wanna be stopped from buying 2496 just because of this.

please respond to my enailadress or send me the adress to this thread so i can follow up. i found this thread through a seacrh and i cant find its adress?!

good luck, C.

Digital outs will not interface with analog headphones or speakers. You need a device that will accept a digital signal.

hi, i'm finding it difficult to understand what you mean but I think you mean you'll take the analog rca outputs of the 2496 and then physically switch between speakers and phones using an adaptor for the phones.

'fraid this wont work cos you'll need the headphones to be amplified in some way. By the sound of it you're using a pair of cheap multi-media speakers with a in a small input jack but no headphone out, so the cheapest solution would be to buy a pair of speakers with a headphone out socket.

hope this helps and I understood u correctly. It helps to be absolutely specific of what your problem is if u want good solutions.

good luck

Well you could get digital speakers and/or digital headphones. Lots of those on the market, from not so cheap computer speakers to super expensive.

I don't quite understand your last post, Maston. Did you find a solution?

Emeric,

yeah I found a solution ages ago - I had to mix my 2496 and SBLive outputs together which I did with a small midiman multimixer 6, which has a phones socket on it. Problem solved.

my last post was trying to help calle get off the ground in the way I first did - which was to just plug my phones into the headphone out on my speakers. I had the feeling he needed a cheap and cheerful solution see, though I could be wrong.
