Can I use a stereo receiver instead of a desktop monitor/mixer/

I know this has got to be a stupid question, and although not a newbie, it is very newbyish! I am using the same desktop monitor hooked up to basic JBL northridge series speakers that I started with. It is a Samson 40 watt x 2 channel and is pretty much a Stereo receiver minus the am/FM tuner (in which my Tascam US-428 and Mackie 1402 VLZ PRO mixer are connected to). It is faulty now and needs replacing, but I do not want the same model. My dilemma is taking a receiver that receives stereo frequencies (like a basic Sony or Pioneer receiver used in home stereo systems) and replacing the dead Samson. I have read on most of my equipment specs that it can harm devices that use radio frequencies. Do most studio monitors connect via 1/4" jack? Like I said before, I am using regular Monster Cable stereo cable and it worked great until it died. Can I do this? I noticed they have a TEAC for $99 that is a receiver that has digital coaxial connection in Musician's Friend. PLEASE HELP!!
