Can I still come on here?

After listening to your advice, i put various orders in and when it all arrives, I'll have a mini-studio based around the VF80. It really is amazing because depending on how you divvy up a given amount of cash you can assemble systems based on an MR8,VF80, D1200(Korg), AW16(Yamaha), 1066(ZOOM), and still wind up a great set-up.

Personally, because of what I need to do, I'm looking forward to having an entirely self contained mastering unit that includes phantom power, etc. But I am certain the MR8 represents a quantum leap forward in future recording directions (CF card, battery powered). If Fostex built a series of accessories around the MR8 (burner, drum machine, effects/phantom unit) they could turn this into their whole line...

Anyway.... Even though I've gone with a VF80, can I still come on this forum??? I really get a lot from it, and from what I hear abour FOSTEX manuals, I will desperately need your expertise!

Hey billisa,I hope you stick around, so I can listen and get an idea of the real pros and cons of the two machines that you mentioned.For instance .I dont want to mix on the PC.,Way to confusing .But I would like to be able to upload the finished stereo tracks to the PC for other reasons.Is this a problem with the VF80.But Im still wondering if the MR-8 will be easier for me to figure out.

First, this is a Fostex forum, second, hey, we're all here to learn, and how you learn is to ask questions, so it seems to me you are in the exact right place. Congratulations, you got the system that works for you! That's what this is all about!!!!!!
 
That is what I like to hear. People making a great decision based off of sound research and who are happy with it. Let us know how the VF-80 works out for ya and please post a song to share that would be really cool!

The truth is I think there's a learning curve with ANY system you decide to use (PC/MULTI-TRACK/WHATEVER). Personally, I didn't want to invest any more in my computer, so I chose a standalone unit (VF80). Had I gotten confidence I could have definitely and easily configured a laptop, I'd have maybe gone that way. But I kept hearing horror stories. Even so, having a 14inch display, and the portability of a laptop is cool... And for some, works like a dream.

Just speaking for me, even though I've been recording since I was like 12 years old, I've never done so digitally -- with all the new hardware -- so there is a fear factor (similar to what happens whenever we try something new, like a new sport).

I think you need to have confidence that you WILL be able to learn new systems -- and come to love them. The only real question is, when you have learned them, after having the wisdom that only experience can give, will you be happy with having gone a certain way (PC/HDR...) It's hard to know what we'll really need/want until after getting our feet wet. The beauty in all this is that truly great results can be gotten with ANY method you choose.

Back in the day, the differences between various tape decks could be quite substantial in terms of basic sound quality (S/N; THD;wow and flutter;etc). I'm not saying that isn't at all the case today, but specs/results are so good across the board, that it's hard to make a bad mistake with a certain brand. James Taylor's "Hourglass" was recorded 16 bits/44.1khz!

When was the last time you heard anyone totally disparage the sound quality of ANY recorder from Fostex, Korg, Tascam, Yamaha, Roland, Boss, Zoom, etc? That's the beauty of digital -- it's made the "sound" playing field fairly level, so now it's left to one's own imagination, skill, musical sense, knowledge, not just what they could afford to spend.

So, do your research, then jump in... You'll do fine.

The point is not what equipment is best, but what is going to be best for you in terms of recording goals, features, cost of invest-ment, and whatever other factors a person cares to throw into the mix. And the best choice for me may not be the best for someone else.
And as someone pointed out, this is the FOSTEX forum, not the MR-8 or VF-08, 16, 80, 160 forum.

Keep on recording. And let's keep the questions and suggestions coming.

Hi Bill - I recently bought a VF80 and I love it to bits.

I'd love to share things with you but I'm English so obviously I'm congenitally unable to do so:eek:

There was a series of threads a while back about the VF's, including a highly entertaining and delightfully pointless row about the best way to get stuff from VF to PC, but we've been overrun by the MR8 mob recently.

Thanks Garry! I'm expecting deilivery of the VF80 on Monday... I'm going to start small, but I have big plans. I've already downloaded the manual. It doesn't seem as badly written as I've heard, but then, I'm used to Japanese firms and their university trained translators who've obviously never actually spoken English. My first Toshiba reel-to-reel had everything written in the past tense! "This button was needed when you tried to rewind the tape..."

By the way, does the display show what version of software is loaded, so I'll know if I need the latest version?

Actually it was about how the benefits of using solid state media might outweigh the advantages of a high capacity drive for some users, but enough of that...

billisa - I'm looking forward to your impressions of the VF-80. Sounds like you found the right machine.

By the way, does anyone know what happened to the official Fostex Forum...? It was going ok, then it just suddenly ceased to be...

This forum is not intended to be a competitive forum. We all happen to have Fostex machines.

Mr8 just happens to be the one I have, and like many others on this forum, love it. Fostex is to be commended for the advances they have made in this field. They have put "Digital" technology in the hands of people who otherwise would never have been able to afford it.

I think we do indeed need to stick together. Meaning all of us collectively. We can All learn from each other. That is what this forum is for.

Me too!... After a month of researching and racking my brain, debating whether to go the Layla laptop or the other stand alone recorders I chose the Fostex VF80cdr, I was looking for the easiest and most portable, plus I wanted quality... I bought mine for $599.00, which was the cheapest I found, I also ordered a SP B1 mic... read good things about it... anyway Im pretty much a novice to digital recording, I hope to learn a few things from you guys in here... I also downloaded the manual, man there's alot of pages there... LOL....

I purchased a VF-80CD after doing cost/benefit comparisons between it and the MR-8 for over two months. It has nothing to do with which is the better machine. It boiled down to which was best for me at this time. Both are great machines and I'm glad people on this forum are willing to post examples of what they've done.

As someone earlier in this thread noted, Fostex is to be commended for making digital multitrack recording affordable, not only for the working musician, but for the casual hobbyist as well. But that has been what Fostex has been about for over 20 years, always "one-upping" TASCAM by offering a quality product with more features at a lower price. I can remember when Fostex offered an 8-track open reel analog recording machine for less than the TASCAM 4-track.

I'm going on a limb to predict that this revolution in home recording technology combined with the internet is going to have a seriously negative impact on the recording industry as more and more bands realize that for what it costs to record an lp in rented studio time, they can buy the equipment, and produce cd's independently.

While there will be a few real talents issuing material through the "conventional" channels, most of the music industry is going to be overrun by Britney Spears wannabes, Backstreet Boy clones, and "American Idol" spinoffs, the real talent will be found "underground"

Ha, that's funny. Yep, I remeber back in the old days (December) when there wuz only 1 guy with the MR-8 here and 2 guys waiting for 'em from MF. We only had like, 2 threads and we had to walk 10 miles to get to school with no shoes...
