Can I sing? Or hit a note at least? Torment!

Hey guys!,

So, I been wanting to do this for some time, but I finally decided to just give it a go. I love music like nothing else, it is part of me. I am hoping that you guys would let me know if I have a CHANCE? Please consider the following:

1. I stared singing (quietly in my room, lol) about one year ago, *sometimes*. And 2 months ago is when I started it to sing bit louder. My point... I have no practice. NONE, vocal chords are weaaak. LOL. Not to mention how I barely talk.
2. I apologize in advance!! I was studying and the last thing I had in mind was to pay attention to myself sing. I was not really feeling the music. And I am sorry for the track playing in the background.

Please let me know if I have a little something. I need motivation. No one knows my love for music, except for this thread now. :(

:'( ... I thought I had something... I usually hear people who can't sing (IMO) and you guys tell them that all they need is lessons. I'm confused. Is it the way I sing, the way I sound?
 
I know you guys don't have to do this, but can I get constructive feedback. Would it be worth it to take lessons? How do I sound? What makes me sound bad?
 
Okay, you want a serious response? Note that this is the second time in a week that I've written something like this -- there is a search function on HR (and please note that HR stands for "Home Recording").

My area of expertise is musical theater. I don't know anything about "pop" styles, other than that, if you sing wrong, you'll wind up with vocal nodes and won't be able to sing at all. That said, from my perspective:

Your placement is wrong. You're breathing wrong. You voice is completely unsupported. You can't match pitch accurately. Your phrasing is awful. You don't know how to interpret lyrics or melody to give each meaning.

Anyone who is not tone deaf can learn to sing. You do not appear to be tone deaf, therefore you can learn to sing. Find a vocal coach who teaches whatever style it is you want to sing, study for a year or so, practice a lot, and then come back and ask us what we think.

This forum isn't "The Internet Has Got Talent" or "Internet Idol." It's one thing when someone who actually has some craft asks for technical pointers. It's another altogether when someone whose sole music background is singing along with radio while studying says, "Please teach me to sing." I probably could, but not over the internet and certainly not for free. I, like virtually everyone here, participate on HOMERECORDING.com because I'm interested in . . . HOME RECORDING. If you want to know a HOMERECORDING response: get a microphone, get an audio interface, get a decent DAW, get a copy of Autotune or Melodyne, use a lot of reverb, and only send copies of your recording to really, really close friends.

Both. And people needing voice lessons is usually the answer, because obviously they are failing to learn how to sing well by themselves. The right voice coach can help a ton. Take some lessons if you truly love music.
 
Is "Can I sing?" an internet meme or something? How does everyone know to use the exact same title for their pleas for attention?

That's just it....EVERYONE (especially the teen set) these days think they can sing, and that they have an equal shot at American Idol or AGT, having seen the types of people who go to those auditions and maybe even get past the first level.

God how I HATE American Idol, America's Got Talent and that whole crop of "talent" shows that have dominated TV the last few years.
Sure, there ARE some people with REAL talent on those shows....but each season, you can count them on one hand...maybe.
The times I've been forced to watch 10-15 minutes of any one of those shows (hey, my old mother likes that shit, like most elderly women)...I'm often speechless at the amount of bullshit praise the "judges" often give people who suck.
I'm hearing some chick going way off key on note after note....and the judges will gush at how much "emotion" she put into it. :facepalm:

They should call the shows "American Effort" or "America's got Guts"...

I agree 1000%. What these shows also never mention is that most of the top talent who appear have actually trained for years and have performed extensively, both professionally and semi-professionally. Very, very, very few people are "natural talents." You can be a self-taught musician or singer, but it still takes years of serious work.
