I just want to get a better understanding of what equipment a studio starting in the first year would purchase. A list would help. Also what it a good equipment budget for a small low-budget to set at start up? if you could help me with thias i thank you in advance!

Are you trying to make money? If so, I would just free-lance out of an existing studio.

Can I come work for you?:D

I come cheap, and I'd clean up after myself....

mic > preamp > AD converter > interface > pc > interface > DA converter > amp > monitors. Depends on your budget what you fit into each section(for daw setup).

Some equipment comes with more than one built in, like my fw-1804 interface, which has preamps and AD/DA convertion built in to 4 of the channels. 4 without preamps, and 8 without preamps and converters. Some mics even have everything built in, except pc, although this isn't a good idea.

So my equipment list:

Mics:
Studio Projects B1
T.bone MB75
T.bone MB85 beta
T.bone SC300
T.bone BD300
And soon to be most of the Naiant range. Will expand when budget allows

Interface/convertion/preamps:
Tascam FW-1804
will expand with 4 good quality preamps and Behringer ADA8000

PC + Cubase LE(will upgrade to Cubase 4)

Monitors:
Alesis M1 Active Mk2s
Hifi speakers for reference
t.bone HD-990D

Hi Ccrosley.
Pandamonk is pointing you in the right direction as far as what to buy.
If you are really on a tight budget, then use the thing that is free (time) and wait for deals on craigslist and ebay while you research what items you actually need.
How many simultaneous inputs do you need?
Are you recording a whole band or just solo singer songwriter stuff?
How many different instruments do you play, and how convenient would you like it to be, to switch between them?
In my case, I play (badly) lots of instruments, and I wanted it to be extremely convenient to switch between them; I have 16 inputs into the computer and a mixer with 16 preamps to feed it. I seldom have to unplug or reposition a microphone to play drums, guitars, vocals, cello, trumpet etc.
I bought nearly everything used, sometimes extremely used, over a three year period - I think I probably got just about as much bang for the buck as is possible.
cheers
chris
