Wrong. In terms of capturing sound, it's your hardware that makes the difference. And in terms of manipulating sound, it's your plugins that make the difference. But in terms of making a sound into a .wav, all programs are basically created equal.

What it comes down to is features, and what you're comfortable using.

Collier is'nt a real mix, it's supposed to sound like a marching band in the distance. no bass and yes the kick is supposed to mix in with the snare, a military or high school sound.

there's problems with my other mix, but it's somewhat better. and it's a real song.

wfaraoni-Sheesh thanks man-Thats about the best compliment I ever got, you made my day! Yeah its a home studio-it actually moved in the middle of the process-I about pulled my hair out trying to mix in the singers den-even with near field monitors-what I was hearing was rarely what I got as a finished product so it was a give and take-some of those songs I must have mixed a couple of hundred times before I just gave up.

As far as gear-almsot all tascam stuff tmd1000 board-pci822 soundcard and a da38 recorder which has been retired now that we can record straight to cakewalk at 20 bit. Nothing special on the mics either ...

Honestly, I didnt learn cakewalk till the completion of these mixes-I was fighting automation alot of the time(though I have recently figured it out and it rocks)-I like the tape sim effect-very good for warming up and leveling off vocals-other than that- I used some eq's to carve space outta like freq tracks. The important part is recording a good PERFORMANCE with a good SOUND and strong SIGNAL. Oh yeah I finished them off with "OZONE"(I wont say mastered ) What else-we have our own server believe it or not-we had to pay for the domain name-and our drummer is a web guy so thats how the stuff got there.

Teach-what you listened to was a straight up 8 trk recording-no cakewalk-I'm rerecording that song now should sound great. I would LOOVE to do a collab-not sure how it can be done but im definetely willing.

OK.. I broke my no MP3.com rule to listen to to the top. That kick is to loud, in fact it makes my crash cymbol seem like a whisper it's also fake sounding and emotionless, The kick and snare that is. the rest of the mix is pretty nice, mellow, smoth. I like the melody line.

It's not just the Spam, I have other issues about MP3.com, they were good until they got greedy.

u thought the kick was loud? really...in hip hop, rnb , pop, kicks are clearly heard just incase u thought they were supposed to be low like ur mix

yea i've heard that the drums were "weak" i agree wit the kick to a certain extent but the snare...i don't see, i guess everyone can't be wrong

Scott, I'm listening to your tune right now. Nice guitar work. The harmony licks are nice indeed. Just my humble opinion but the drums just didn't do the tune justice. The cymbal is too busy and just doesn't sound good (too tizzy). And as thin as my stuff sounds I still would've liked more "ass" in your tune. Again, just my humble opinion.

Ok I listened to everything-Ill keep my comments short for lack of time and terrible typing technique:

Teacher-I agree with whoever said the bass drum and snare drum are too loud-I dont think its a genre thing they just stick out too much-I might have chosen diff sounds too considering all the perfect drum samples there must be to work with. Other than that it sounded great.

TrackRat-I liked all your stuff and it sounded great-I loved the sax's and the George Harrison slide-The high end was nice and clear for an mp3-That test Jam was my fave that knocked me out-great playing and crystal clear.

TorpidX-Nice playing and great tone-A reverb on the drums of the short tune might have helped with the percieved environment.

Eurythmic-We Cried -nice song-I was wishing for real drums-around 2:30-3:00 the lead vocals get buried by the backgrounds. Nice production theres alot goin on there.

Wysbcc- Real good playing. That bass drum track is a little off to me in the beginning-it does a double kick on the wrong beat-and that ride cymbal pattern isnt very natural-Nice harmony work-good sound in general.

Made it . So I guess we can say there is not a cakewalk sound but people using cakewalk to try to capture there sound. TrackRats sounded the most professional but they all had something to like about them. Thanks for the listen(s) folks.

I liked the guitar work, I don't entirely like the drums, but they're not unbearable. I like the flow of the song except the sudden ending, it has an unfinished feel.


However, I don't know what you did to the mix, but honestly, it's terrible. The signal to noise ratio was killing me, and the volume non existant. The whole mix lives entirely in the bass range. no mids or highs whatsoever. It sounds like it was dumped from a 4 track tape totally mono. The one strong point was the guitar tone. very nice tone.


Because I liked it, I decide to play around with some mastering on it so I could hear it. I think it came out pretty good in the end. now I've got to try these new toys on my own bad mixes.

If I can get it to you somehow, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised, and it better displays the talent and the overall feel you were trying to get.

scott wysbcc Theme from Rocky?

Hi scott: Isnt that a song from Rocky in reverse!? I do like the crescendo effect. Whats with all the effects, (prob somewhat overdone for my taste, but then Im an Old fart ? first I think a keyboard sounds like its playing reverse tracks in the beginning, maybe thats what you were looking for , I like it but because it sound cool but I dont think it goes with this song at that extent.

Now the drums, Its nice to see that another newbie is struggling with drums too. I have flat, thin "$19 drum machine sounding" drums which are hard to enhance. Ive got a Yamaha keyboard but they still sound weak. I tried the tape sim effect after I converted them to audio and it helped, but they still didnt sound very good I doubled the track and added some verb that helped a little too. Yours are not up to the rest of the songs quality either IMHO. Hey if you find some cool fattening tricks that work post them for me. Id go a little lighter on the effects and do the drum work as needed.

All in all a pretty darn good composition, I got the jist of what you where doing and have great respect for your composition skills. Now all we have to work at getting it to have the mix and sound quality of whats stuck in our heads. which is harder than I thought. I just got out of the tape age and never did anything worthwhile with that medium. When I get something worth listening to I post something myself. Any ideas on how I can get my lousy vocals to sound like Im good? Oh yeah the guitar flowed well but I would add a little more variety to the licks, nice playing.

I hope you dont mind the Rocky joke, ....Hmmm I wonder how much that soundtrack made???

I don't do the trauma stuff real well, but I compliment your ingenious work. I found them very Touching esp te wtc one but musically monotonous, I quess that may be a tradeoff for conceptual genius.
How do you spell that anyway. There was one on the second listed page, lets see," In the shadows" that was pretty darn good. Bravo!

Youve got some better drums then Ive been able to get.
Tell me how and what they are made of if you would, I think Id be satisfied with drums of that quality myself.

The guitar sounds kinda weak in a few songs, though, how are you recording it? Are you going direct? Thats what it sounded like.

sorry about re-stirring all the emotions from september 11th again. but that was the effect i was going for. i was trying to make the listener feel the sadness and the insecurity all over again and then lead the listener along a road that leads towards the end where we take action. but it doesnt end in a happy way, i ended it with the fact that the people that died will never be forgotten.
yes i record everything direct. i still have alot to learn about this home computer recording stuff. i dont own any good microphones at the moment. i guess ill hear the difference when i start recording with mics as opposed to direct. right now, i have absolutely no idea how you guys can tell wether somethings been mic'd or not. im amazed by that. i even had one guy tell me what kind of keyboard i am using. i was like WHAT???!!!! were you spying on me?????
for drums, i used drag and drop drummer on the earlier stuff. thats a cd that used to be sold on the cakewalk web site. not sure if they still sell it. on "awakened", i pressed the drum keys on my keyboard. what a pain in the ass that was. i did that in realtime. check out the double bass drum loop. that sucked to do, but i was and am proud of myself.
now i use a BOSS DR770. still learning it as i go, just like everything else here.
you used the words "musically monotonous". did you find some of the songs similar to each other? or were the riffs just too repetitive? because i think that myself sometimes. sometimes, i think all of these parts should be in 1 giant song.

Stratomaster -- missed you before -- I listened to three of your tunes, good work, above average mixing for a home reccer (better than mine for sure). Musically to happy for my taste - has a 70's quality.

Teacher, what I mean is the snare hits are all even, robotic and quantized (you put some little fills in, but they were quantized). also I meant both the snare and kick are to loud in the mix. the 808-like sound is pretty bad, but I don't know if it's still used in hip-hop. I thought hip-hop was also supposed to have heavy bass to it. your kick and snare are so loud you can barely hear the bass. Clearly heard kick was 10db ago.

Don't get me wrong, the kick being to low and undefined in my mix is one of my problem spots. (not collier though, it's still supposed to be that way, and I'm not doing any more to that one, the master got lost)
