Can I get your input on my first mix?

Just recorded this band the other night at their jam space (big open area above a garage). Recorded the drums using a Glynn Johns approach, mics could have probably been placed better, but we didn't have that much time.

Then after the drums were tracked, we recorded bass, guitar and then vocals. Vocals where done with a Beta58 as didn't think the space was suited to use a LDC mic.

I'm pretty happy with it, but I feel the vocals aren't sitting just right.

As this is my first attempt at recording and mixing I'd LOVE to get some input from you guys!

This is the problem that gets everyone.

The vocals sound muffled a bit... but, all factors considered, it's representative of the band.

Agree about the vocals, but I think the end result is good, captured the vibe and feel. Reminded me of the Moby Dick riff. Liked it.

Pretty sweet first mix! Just a couple comments:

1. Boost the highs on the snare, big time.
2. Play around with cutting in the low-midrange area of the vocals, as well as boosting some of the higher frequencies on the vocals.

BTW, I LOVE the bass tone at 1:30.

Really good first mix. The kick hits me in the chest and I have my volume down low. I like that. Like someone said, more high end in the snare. But really, it sounds very good.

Thinking the drums need some EQing. The kick does hit me in the chest too, but I think it might be a little too loud. It kind of steals the focus.

Other than that, great first mix for sure!

Here is a slightly revised version, I believe the vocals are clearer and I toned down the kick as well.
