Can I get it done with a laptop?

We're just getting started and are about to buy a new computer.
A laptop would be preferable if it will get the job done. Memory and Processor speed shouldn't be a problem, but what about compatibility with other hardware? I was planning on using a delta 1010 or Aarvark Q10 with a PC, but whats available with comparable I/O in USB? Will I sacrifice functionality for potability?
It be great to have a rig that could be used in studio and mobile.

Thanks.
Dan

i need info on this too. in general which is more likely to get you professional sounding songs at home studio prices-a PC or a MAC?

re laptops

i'm a computer engineer. so i'm biased against laptops right now for several reasons for audio. and i know some will disagree.
for following reasons
1. not as flexible as towers
2. not as easy to upgrade. tend to obsolete fast.
HOWEVER, i think the laptop is getting close now.
within 2 years i think with new technologies settling down like sata etc and once the price of 3 to 5ghz processors comes down
and with more competition and price drops i might consider one.
i want to see a lot more processing power and better drive technology in laptops.

Thanks, those are good enough reasons when I add that the only interfaces I'm interested in use pci cards, USB seems to limit hardware choices considerably.
