can i extend my mouse and keyboard cables?

my pc is in a rack mount case so it is a little farther away from my keys and mouse than usual. do they make extension cables for these? thanks -jay
 
thank you steve-o, i mean christian. will running a longer cable to my monitor result in any kind if a lesser quality image?

My English is poor .

My computer is 5 meters from the monitor . The cable will reduce the quality of image . But different cable will have different result . Let me tell you what cable is the best .

My English is poor , I don't know the name of the cable . But I can describe the cable to you . It is a 3 or 5 meters long cable , near the end of the cable , there is a small cylinder tuber around the cable . If the cable don't have the cylinder tuber , don't buy it , it will reduce the quality of image .
 
Extending the monitor cable may or may not cause probs. I've seen good cables work fine, seen a cheap radio shack cable make the picture ghost a bit. Just depends on the length and quality.
 
Yeah, make sure the monitor cable is properly shielded. Quality cables cost more but not much. 5m (15ft) should cost around 10-15 bucks.

is danshi right about getting only the cables with the cylinder in them? what is the proper name for the cable anyhow?

I think the cylinder is a magnet. Probably helps block interference. When you take a notebook PC apart you see the nifty little magnets that go around the video data cable too...

The cylinder is a magnet , it can reduce the distortion . If you use a cable don't have the cylinder , the image will have little distortion or "tail" .

I tried several cables . I am sure .

Look at the default cable of the monitor , it has the cylinder .
 
I use a wireless mouse and keyboard in the control room.... mounted them on an autolocater stand so I can roll it around -- it made life real easy!
 
Go digital

The best way is to go digital. Get a digital LCD with a video card w/ DVI output, and you're set! Then you can have a LONG LONG cable :)

P.S.: If you get it long enough, you will have latency and a loss on the amplitude of the signal; then you need a repeter. But that's for a LOOOONG cable :P
 
To correct Daffy and Danshi, the cylinder is not a magnet, it's a ferrite. Ferrites are used extensively as RF filters. In fact the power connector on many laptops also has that same bulge to house a ferrite cylinder for the same purpose. And yes, they are highly effective.
