can cubase do this?

I can't figure out if I can do this with cubase or if I need something else, maybe someone here knows.

Can I use cubase like a phrase sampler, by say setting up a loop length, then loop record over and over, putting a new layer on with every pass until I'm done?

I have tried every option using multirecord with looping turned on, but I just end up with multiple lanes on the same channel, so only one pass is played at a time. I think I can also do this and get every pass on a new channel, but I don't really want this either.

I can see using this method to quickly double a guitar or vocal part too. Anyone?

I'm using VST 5

As far as I know, there isn’t any way to do that. Cubase would have to do an audio mix of the new material with the last recorded file.

It seems to me there would be some drawbacks to recording that way. If you record a really good take on the first loop but then flub on the second loop, you ruin the first loop. And you don’t have the option of mixing the levels of the two loops how you want. But I suppose for small, quick things it would at least be more convenient.

Yeah, that's essentially the idea. For quick takes, not really for final recordings.

I saw Joseph Arthur live recently, and his whole show was basically done this way. He would bang on his acoustic to lay down a rhythm, then a chord progression, then a little vocal accompaniment, and so on, then sing along with it, taking what he came up with for better or for worse. Every time he did this it was probably a little different. He came up with some really interesting, layered things this way. Incidentally, he came off like a huge prick at the show I saw in LA.

However, I would love to have that capability for hashing out ideas on the fly. I do this the normal way, by tracking one by one and looping, but its a bit more hassle and everytime you stop you loose the groove.

Maybe cubase can't do it, but I'm sure there's something out there that does. This is pretty a standard feature on guitar effects toys today, or so I've heard. I just figured there might be a software option too.

Thanks,
J

Hey there

I just had the guys from MDA plugins make me a pluggin that you put on an insert on a track in your hostprogram and it does just that, phraze sampling. I have been useing the ecohplex for awhile and it rules, but haveing the phizing inside cubase was key because I could take advantage of all the other plugs. Thanks to Paul Kellett at MDA. here is a beta version if youre so bold. let me know how it works for you.

wow meta...you have plug-ins made for you?! I'm speechless. And giddy. Thanks, I'm gonna check it out right now.

Very cool! Now if I could figure out how to use it. Meta..can you give me a quick rundown on how it functions?

It seems to start as soon as the plug-in is initiallized, and I see a few things that lead me to think that I should be able to set start and stop for the loop time with a sustain pedal, I assume of my midi keyboard. So far I haven't been able to make that work. I don't know if its set up correctly.

But it seems like everything I'm looking for is there.
