Hello,

I want to try a new vocal recording techique and that is recording with none of the vocal in my headphones. I tried muting the track while recording but that didn't get it. I can't think of another way.

Anyone?

Too clarify...I've tried muting the track I was recording. This did not work when I tried it.

I don't believe there is any way to control monitoring through CEP. I use a mixer which allows me to select the bus going into the sound card as well as L+R which is the stereo playback, so if I "de-select" L+R for the vocal channel it would play back the already recorded tracks (which are restricted to L+R) without the vocals in the headphones. Again, CEP itself doesn't have any such routing capability.

try your soundcards mixer and just mute the line level VOLUME control, should b able to mute the line-in volume,,,,b sure not to mute the recording level, that should work if ur only using CEP and a PC

I don't get what you are saying. "Line in" is my record source. I have a fader and a mute button. If either is off I get no signal.

lpdeluxe....

Yes I don't think I'm going to be successful on this one. The track mute button should work for this but it doesn't. That's one on my wish list.

Actually I don't really know if the recording track "mute" works because even with my soundcard line in off I can still hear my record souce. I get no level for recording but the signal still passes through to my headphone amp. How can this be?

I record direct to disk through mic and pre, but I play back through a mixer. If I don't want to listen to the vocal I'm singing, I just have to turn down the level on the mixer channel I'm listening through.

If you're running windows and have the typical windows soundcard mixer (little speaker cone looking icon), just turn the line in fader all the way down in the "Playback" section of the mixer, and make sure it's all the way up in the "Recording" section. I do this all the time to adjust the level of my vocal in the headphones.

Chrisharris..

I'm running XP with a 24bit LynxOne soundcard. I thought all internal sound stuff was disabled but this has had me stumped for some time...like how I'm getting signal even when the soundcard line in is muted. So like I said I don't know if the track mute works while in record mode or not. Could someone else try it out for me? The object is to hear the playback of the song/other tracks but not the track I'm recording, in this case vocals.

Dobro...

Hey I'm cheap I don't want to have to buy a mixer...ha!

Speaking of mixers, I do have a Sony 4trac mini disc recorder. Could this be used in the way you use your mixer to accomplish the recording scenario I described?

Keep in mind, everything in a windows mixer has 2 modes. "Playback" mode, and "Recording" mode. You can mute the playback line in, but if you have it selected as the recording device, it'll still record...you just can't hear it - which is what you want, right?

I'm sure you know this, but when the mixer window comes up, select "Options" and then "Properties" and select "Recording" mode to make sure that fader's all the way up...then go back to "Options" , "Properties", and select "Playback" to mute the line in.

I guess I'm missing something.

I don't have a widows mixer, at least I can't find it. I do have a LynxOne mixer where "show options" is checked. I have analog in, digital in, analog out, digital out and nothing about "record" versus "play". I do understand what you are talking about because I used the windows mixer years back before I got this soundcard, but my widows mixer/onboard sound is disabled, at least that's what I thought and I can't find any other sound options. My LynxOne is the default device.

Hold everything!...I was rechecking my LynxOne mixer and I do have "monitor options" where I have "analog in" checked another option available is "analog out" maybe if I select this option I will get playback tracks without record source/line in. Let me check it out and get back.

Duh! that was it!

I just selected under "monitor source"on my soundcard mixer, analog out instead of analog in.

Thanks everyone for your help.

After I'm able to try out the vocal recording technique that prompted all this discussion I'll get back with a thread on the results. Maybe it's a technique that others would find helpful.
