Check out the akai mpc series.

Yes, if it can't do sampling, it isn't a sampler. Maybe a sampleplayer at best.

What's the maximum length of the sound clips you want to midi trigger? Ram based samplers will have a hard time with doing anything of any length. Gigasampler is disk streaming based, and doesn't care how long the samples are.
