Can anyone recommend some cables?

Hi. I need some short 1/4" unbalanced cables to connect my preamp to my compressor. I am looking for good enough quality not to overly compromise the audio but not too expensive. (If you want an idea of my setup, I use a DMP3 preamp, a Shure SM57, an FM Audio RNC, and an Audiophile 2496--so I'm not rich!)
Yes--I need unbalanced T/S cables. The RNC won't accept TRS unless it is being used as an effects look from a mixer. I am plugging it straight into the signal chain.
Thanks for your help.

Yo Jam Drums:

You can check several vendors for cables; Musician's Friend, AMS, Full Compass, etc.

However, You might check out markertek.com as they specialize in many types of cables, sizes, etc.

Like Tennile said, "It pays to shop around...."

Sorry; are you recommending brands of cables or places to buy them?

Thanks--I'll look into it. My local music store only caries Ultraflex Ernie Ball cables. Anyone know if they are any good?

I was suggesting "places to buy" cables.

Hosa cables are not really top grade cables unless you get into Zaoella [sp] which is high end. I have one Z cable I use for vocals.

Mogami top grade cables are good -- they also have an inferior cable which costs less but works.

Monster cables are overrated but sturdy.

Buy a couple of each brand and see how they sound.

Avoid Hosa cables, and *any* cables that use the molded plastic plugs. Cables with molded plastic ends go bad quickly and cannot be repaired.

Markertek is a good suggeestion, as they can make the cables to the exact length you need. I believe they also use Canare cable, which is good quality. My studio is mostly wired with Canare and Mogami cable and it sounds good, and is not the most expensive stuff around.

Just avoid the real sheap stuff with the molded plastic cables and you'll be ahead of the game.

What I do is a mix of this stuff - I have a handful of Hosa converter snakes, some Jade stuff, a box full of Musicians Friends XLR stuff, a few pretty decent cables, and a few soldering irons. More and more if I need a cable, I make it. Hosas are great in a pinch but they have a short lifespan; they give up at an inopportune moment. You can get XLR connectors for about $2 - 3 each online and Belden bulk cable isn't very expensive. I have my three color Mackie cable poster up on the wall (go to Mackie's web page and nose around; you can download all kinds of diagrams and stuff) and the soldering iron is never far away. Just make 'em.

My studio cabeling consists of Canare, Beldon, and Monster.
Canare's supposed to be the shitz!, but I gotta tell you, for plain ol' drag 'em across the floor mic cables, I really dig the Beldon cables. They have Neutrix connectors, excellent sloder joints, and they're just plain tough as nails.
