Can anyone help me with my mix?

Hello

I've recently recorded some songs with my band, which I am relatively happy with, apart from the guitars. Basically I am using 4 tracks of guitars at any one time, and the results are mushy and lack definition. I have no experience of recording/mixing techniques, so if anyone who knows how this stuff works could take a listen to my stuff and give me some advice, I would be very grateful!!

You can listen to three of the songs here:

Jon;

I dowloaded Deep Inside and the mix ain't that bad considering all that you have going on in that toon. Layering guitars is an art and the master of layering is Jimmy Page. Get yourself some old Zep toons and listen to what Jimmy does with all those guitars. Where he places them, etc.

It sounds like you have the Lead Guitar doubled on this toon and then on several instances you have it coming in straight out left and right. IMHO, The only time you want to double something if it's not thick enough in the mix. The guitar tones are anything but thin.

In layering, placement and EQ are everything if you want each one to have it's own voice. If they are all sqeezed together and sound the same, you are going to get a Muddy sound.

Hope this gives ya some ideas.

Hey... you're the guy that did "Asphyxiate", aren't you? That's still on the HD...

Will hit some of your new stuff later...

Thanks for the tips there. I might try stripping out the double tracking and see what I get. I just got hold of a guitarport as well, so I might give that a whirl! I guess it's a force of habit i've got into with double tracking, to try and beef up crummy tracks!!

Participant- yeah, that's me! He he! Cheers!

Thanks very much
