Can AMD come back?

Anandtech report that the middle of the range Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 currently retailing for around $330 outperforms ALL AMD chips, even the FX-62 which costs over $800.

I can see amd prices plummeting in the near future.

This is a great time to be building a daw :D
 
I thought the current question was more like "can Intel come back".

AMD woke the sleeping giant. Now, it's a David vs. Goliath battle extraordinaire. If I were guessing, AMD and Intel are probably going to leapfrog each other for some time to come....

half of benchmarks say one thing, half say the other

AMD is far from gone
 
True, there are conflicting reviews. Nasa still says AMD though;)

I'm sure AMD will hit the market with something that is comparable in both price and performance to Intel. AMD has always been a great price/performance option - that's their market.
 
AMD AM2 4200+ (new chipset....so when the other processers drop, just stick them on your motherboard and you are good to go) i think is one of the best deals on the market right now

you can build a very sweet, TOP OF THE LINE (excluding video card, but most people recordering aren't gaming on that pc, it's dedicated) for 500 bucks...i just did, with 2 gigs of ram, almost half a terabyte of storage...etc
 
From all I have seen with the newer AMD's, one would almost be better of going with the older X2's. There seem to be more stable boards for them, and I haven't heard of a great performance jump. Of course the Core 2's are kicking everybody's behind. Untel those came about the intels were pretty far behind. For the most extreme stuff though, from what I see, the opterons are still ahead of Intel products.
 
I think AMD will come back with something faster...and then Intell will do the same... :D

Seems to be the pattern man... :D

The computer I record on, was a state of the art AMD.....a few years back. Athlon1200, 512MB RAM, and it would be considered junk now....but I still use it.

I edit on a P4, 3Ghz, with 1.5MB RAM...and it's not much more than mediocre.... :eek:

Agreed, that's been the way for a while now. These new core 2 duo chips, combined with the 965/975 chipsets, faster fsb and ram seem to be quite a setp up in speed and performance.

I think it's ironic that Intel has adopted AMD's philosophy of executing more instructions with fewer clock cycles to keep the heat and power consumption down, and so far seem to be doing it a bit better and cheaper

i think i've noticed that very pattern. you may be on to something there. :D i'm still running my o' thunderbird rig as my recording machine with no problems. 1.3 thunderbird (old as dirt), 768 ram, and 2 80 gb wd's. rock solid and it was cheap!

details? i could stand more speed although i don't really need it.
 
on the setup i mentioned earlier...ive been running more tracks in pro tools with more...and a bit more processor intensive plug-ins then ive ever ran...

the setup i had before (p4 3ghz 2g ram etc) wouldve choked and died long ago
 
Intel is playing catchup now. AMD has conistently out performed Intel chips, when compared by price point. Even Dell, who said they would NEVER sell AMD based PC's, have started selling AMD based PC's because they were losing their ass trying to compete.

No matter who wins or loses, it is good for us as consumers. It is keeping prices competitive.
 
Core 2 Duo

I just built a DAW using a Core 2 Duo 6600 and it screams. I can literally use at least 4 times the plug-ins as before. i'm not sure what my max is 'cause I haven't got there yet. I usually use about 25 tracks or so. I've used an average of about 3 or 4 plug-ins per plus EQ's on most of them and only gotten the CPU usage meter up half way. I was debating on wether to wait for the woodcrest or not before I built my DAW, but don't regret it at all.
 
my amd setting is ripping it up still....ive been working on a few full mixes with a lot of channels (i'm gonna max out pro-tools LE before i max out the processor) and it's to the point where I dont have to worry about running out of cpu cycles anymore....i just keep on mixing and forget that the computer is really even there

Yeah I've just ordered one of these with an Asus P5B Delux mobo. It's gonna kick some
