Can a rapper do it all?

Is there an authenticity to an MC that does all kinds of rap.Down South, Sampled East Coast Style,Conscious Slow Tempo Stuff,Pop Danceable stuff.West Coast Bounce all on one album.Is it too much? Does an MC have to be defined to one style of music?What do you think.
 
i say a mc doesnt have to be defined in one style but at the same time i think my versitility is wat defines me so hey u be the judge lol

you dont and shouldnt have to do all types . . . u do whats true to/for you. there is, i think, a "kudos" factor if you are able to do all the dif. types u listed -

but each one has to be a genuine "slice" of your own personality or it will in deed sound "corny" or ":fake" if u r doing it JUST to say . . . "i do em all" - i remember buyin somebody's hsit a while ago - and it was just terrible. it was an NYC rapper (not to tish on any of them)

but it was so obvious that he was "mimicking" other types of music - the only songs that were even close to "decent" are the ones where he was doing his own "nyc" type of thing - even the "west coast" beats used for his "west coast" lyrics were . . . butt - just strait booty . . .

LMFAO, No disrespect to the west but it do make people bounce tho.Even the gangsta ish.
 
what ever happend to just making good music. People think too much about style and genre and not enough about if its even good. The best artists out there are the ones who just make music as an extension of themselves. If u have to sit down and say I need this that and another type of song I seriously wonder about the strength of your talent.

I beg to differ. I think you have to have some kiind of approach to everything you do. Yes each song should be an extension of your self, but even the "self" has various moods, desires, etc. Therefore, your songs should adress those various moods, desires, etc. In that way, you would need to "map" or "outline" which slices of thyself you plan to present per project.
 
When I rap, I let the beat guide the words I'm using unless I pre-wrote the lyrics and then the beat makes me say "DAMN those lyrics will sound nice on that". Kind of like Noddy's Kill Time beat. I had the verse pre-written for about 2 weeks before I heard the beat. I heard that and said "Damn, this beat is almost perfect."

I'll flip to any style but only if I think I can flip it proper

I dont thnk mcs need to be versatile, its more the producers that need to be able to work with multiple styles. I mean if all fo a sudden nas satrted spittin soem dirty south he would loose alot of fans, or if luda started doing reggae. But some people do have multiple styles, like mos def, he can drop str8 rhymes and still do that singing stuff he does on some tracks.

I agree with Nas spittin' D. South not working, but I think Luda could pull off spittin on a reggae beat (as long as he doesn't switch his flow up).

i agree but it should be natural. u shouldnt have to force style based songs. if that is ur mood it is natural but if u aint havin that mood feeling or desire its just fake.
