Can a BR-8 be used as a mixer into a poweramp?

my singer needs to build a PA system, and was thinking of going the Mixer->poweramp->speaker direction, instead of a powered mixer.

Can one use the BR8 as a simple mixer / mic pre into a poweramp successfully? he wants to use his this way until he can afford a decent mixer.

I'd figure, RCA to XLR converters on the BR8 line out into a crown poweramp.

tell me if I am wrong.

Thanks

The first problem would be that you can only plug in one 1/4" jack and one mic cable in at a time.

Hardly seems worth it.

I don't know if you have the same I/O on your BR8 as I have on my VS880, but I'm successfully using my VS880 this way ...

Is XLR the only option you have for inputs on the Crown? I'm using a Hafler amp and it's got Neutriks, so either 1/4" or XLR will work.

I simply bought some monster cables that are RCA on one end and 1/4" on the other. Works great!

If you have the I/O flexibility, think about it: it's no different than going from the hard-disk unit into a reference power amp, and out of that into monitors.

As far as inputs, don't know what the BR8 allows ... but I can run 4 simultaneous inputs at a time thru the VS880 and I just put those tracks in "source" mode (you can hear what's going in/coming out but you're not armed for recording ... again, I don't know how similar this is to the Boss units). I use mine as a keyboard mixer, so the 4 line inputs are fine for me.

If you're doing lots of mics, etc, and don't have XLR inputs on your Boss you may just want to buy a used Mackie 1202 for 200 clams and be done with it.

geekgurl: exaclty. we'd definitelty need some sort of cable converter. hte BR8 is a very simple setup. We just need it for 1 vocal mic only at a time. for the moment. if that ever needs to be expanded upon, we'll upgrade to something more appropriate. But it will be great for a temporary solution while he's paying off the power amp and speakers. we wont even use this setup for gigging. appreciate the feedback.

So does the Crown allow inputs from the mixer to be 1/4", or JUST XLR? I don't know of an RCA-to-XLR converter, but maybe Radio Shack can help you out?

Of course if you can use 1/4" at the amp inputs, just get some of those Monster Cables and you're set! :)

Right on, Katmandude! (I like your nom de plume too :) )

Sounds like you're covered. I may need some o' those RCA to XLR in the future, and now I know where to look! :)

The other advantage to using the BR8 is being able to use the reverb in it, if it's got that ...

Cheers,

gg
