im just new to this site so hi all .

ummmmmmm i resently thought of making a cd with my own voice and useing instramentals that i can dload or from a cd i put on my pc i have 2 micraphones one built in to my web cam and a head set one witch is not instaled any one know if theys micraphones will be of good quality when recording bacgroun music and my voice ?

Short answer would be 'no'.

Now, if your just wanting to jack around and do some Kareoke, then sure. If your looking for a somewhat decent sound, then you'll at least want to get a fairly simple dynamic mic. There's a million and one alternatives, and it all depends on what type of quality you're after.

The sm-58 is a microphone made by Shure. In the states you can get them for less than $100. The audiobuddy and studio projects vtb-1 are mic preamps. they are the interfaces between the mic and your soundcard. You will need both to do anything.

By both, he means a microphone and a preamplifier, not both preamps.

You need to plug the microphone into the preamp to boost the signal level, and then the preamp into the "line in" of your soundcard. You'll need recording software too if you don't already have it.

For the absolute cheapest setup that will give you adequate quality, I'd suggest the Audiobuddy preamp and the MXL 990 Microphone, depending on UK pricing of course. You'll also need a mic cable from mic to preamp, and cable from preamp to soundcard. A mic stand is also extremely helpful. All that will be another $50 USD or so.

Take caution when buying your Sm-58. I won an auction on Ebay for one that was sent from St. Charles, Illinois.


Upon opening the package noticed an odor emitting from within. Within a minute my cats were climbing all over me, meowing, and pawing/batting at the packaging. (It was packaged very well! No complaints there)

When I removed the Mic it stank the most godawful stink that I've ever had noticed stunk. It was like someone boxed a friggin carp and mailed it to me.

I quickly plugged the mic in to test it and it worked perfectly. In fact, except for all the pubic hair stuck in the windscreen it was mint. However, nowdays I always make sure to buy my mics brand new or in person.

Sadly, I never did get to use that SM58 for a project. I placed it out back next to the pool to let it air out.. and a pelican flew off with it. I never saw it again.
