Hi Folks,
This is the last in the 1st series of Pygmy Beat recordings. It's a depressing ditty about the joys of conservative governments.
Simple at this stage with just:
Drums
Bass
Guitar 1
Guitar 2 (stereo split of 1)
Vocal
& flute.
VERSION 3 link.

Sonically it is very bassy with the "chords" just being two notes strummed together. The role of the bass is debatable as is the need for percussion.
A simple mix with no added effects though the vocals were recorded through an old powered PA mixer to get some spring reverb.
Have to it...

Hello rayc,
This one is pretty cool and sounds well.
Maybe flute solo could last a little longer.
Guitar tracks are sounding great. Drum track is little boring. (machine ???)
Nice job!

Sikter,
I've added another 30 secs or more of the flute just for you! Just click the replaced link in the original post.
Hope it's enough - if not let me know & I'll try to add another chunk of flautist funk.

I think it's pretty cool like this...stripped down, and simple. Maybe bring the guitars up in volume, so they sit better with the vocals. Since the drums are so simple, they sound ok way back. Bass could maybe use more volume, but not much. Flute solo is a great addition. It changes teh tune up nicely at the end.

Cool tune again man....

I like the Subject matter. Sort of reminds me of something Roger Waters Might write, also has a "another brick in the wall" feel to it. Really cool tune though. Interesting and mysterious.

Nice start for a mix.....

You might look at raising the guitar a bit and carve or pan it away a bit from the bass so the bass has some more presence (love that bass).

Vocals and flute sound good at current levels....

That spring reverb is cool and at a good level on the vocals - I wouldn't add anything else.....

:) :D :) :D

It works for me!

Hi Folks,
I've done a little EQ carving, panning & evening out of the 2 guitars.
I've also added some compression to individual instruments & voice to do similar. Is the voice still OK?
Thanks for the comments & suggestions.
Does this sound more like it to you folk:

?

I like the simple groove on this...kinda reminds me of the Split Endz from the 80's....percussion seemed to be really faded out in the background, not sure if that was intentional or not, but this might sound cool with a stronger kick driving the beat.Flute is way cool...I really love this about your music! Lyrics sound pretty interesting as well..was looking to see if you had them posted on your click site with the song but couldn't find 'em.
Nice listen...

Hey Rayc, on the work headphones, I only hear the guitar and the bass with the drums being in the back. But that sounds cool.

The flute creates that mood of the worker telling the story, and then just looking away from the camera and just busying himself back with his melancholic playing. :)

Nice job on the second mix....The vocals are nice and clear and that cool guitar chugs nicely right beside it (but not on top :D ).

The percussion is a bit hidden - the cymbal/high hat is pretty ok but the snare is a little crispy and I'm not getting a lot of kick. Some of that cool tambourine might work also.

:D :) :D :)

I love the stripped-down production, though the drums might TOO far back. With this kind of production, I would maybe even go further and do some 60's type panning. I'd like to hear how it would sound with the guitar on one side and the drums on the other, widely panned. Maybe even off-setting the bass and the vocals so that nothing's really in the centre. Experiment. But I wouldn't add instruments, as tempting as it might be. It sounds like it should sound stark and lonely to go with the cynical-ness (cynicism?) of the lyrics. Love the flute....try distorting it a bit...I don't know, just thinking out loud.
