Hi Folks,
Below is a link to another Pygmy Beat song. It is, as was the last, a basic mono mix. I need your ideas for a decent mix including EQing AND suggestions as to where & when to fade out or edit.
I'm also worried about the tambourine's rhythm.
http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=3958804&q=hi
The break down is
01 VOX & FLUTE - Terry B
02 Main GTR - Me
03 Kick & Snare drums - Roland
04 Tambourine - the rest is me too - sorry.
05 Crash cymbal
06 Ride cymbal
07 2nd GTR
08 Bass
Any & all suggestions gratefully accepted & implemented. I'll post a draft mix based on your ideas either next weekend or late this week.
Thanks in anticipation.

Kick & Snare drums - Roland
You should fire this Roland guy, too square. :D

Sounds good, balance is fine. Interesting lyrics.

The drums are holding it back, but there is nothing you can do. Maybe more reverb on them. The whole recording in general is pretty dry and could use some reverb, especially the flute.

The part that sounds like "rapping" seems to be a lot lower in volume.

I would suggested fading out about 20 seconds before the end. It goes on a lil long so you could do a ten second fade and cut the last ten seconds.

Good stuff, very unique.

I agree with David...drums could use something....give them some punch. I like the rest of the vibe this has...very cool song. The guitar tone is very nice for this. I agreee you could do something different at the end. It's fun to hear the flute, but keeping with the rest of the song, maybe do as David says......just fade out a bit early.......you won't lose much, but as it's getting quieter, the listener will get that leaving feeling. Sometimes that provides a good impact.

Cool tune man. Fun listen.

Sounds great in mono so panning and eq'ing is gonna make this super. I like the main rhythm and bass guitar - great tones.

Vocals could come up just a tad on the first verses - seem to sit well on the third verse.

Flute could use some reverb just to give it some flavour.

Is this compressed? It has a smooth sound like a compressor has been applied. Not really good at describing the sound but "smooth" and "even" seem to apply here. Whatever that is it should be kept on the final.

I'd probably pan the guitars slightly left right to give the tune some width and pan the various percussion instruments likewise to give some stereo.

Sounds great like I said - looking forward to hearing other comments and mixes as they progress.....

David, Dog & Ido Thanks for the rapid responses.

DavidK - Thank you sir. Yep, the drums are limited. It was the 1st time I'd programmed a drum machine - but that's no excuse. The whole piece is reverb free at this stage. I know I need to ride the faders on some of the vocal sections - I was interested in which would stick out as needing it. I've been listening too long to the pice to be accurate. Thanks for the fade out timezone. I was unable to decided as I really love some flute bits very late in the piece. I know they can be kept for the bonus tracks on the posthumous rerelease (joke). Thanks for the critique. PS when does the LP come out?
Dogman - Ta also for kind word et al. My mate Terry could pull out some very good breathy tones with his flute. The psychological effect of a fade out is powerful isn't it. I always imagine that the worlds best bit of a solo is lurking just passed the end point. I'll fiddle with the drums - maybe compress &/or reverb to bring something else out of them.
Ido1957 - fanque for the compliment. There's some fial mix compression from a plug in on the stereo buss. It does even things out & isn't too obvious. Panning the guitars - should I keep them even & balanced in terms of volume? At present the main guitar is louder. Creating the stereo image is the thing I dither about most.

I'll tweak & freak across the week & post an updated version sometime on the coming weekend.
Thankyou very much folk. I'm particularly pleased that I managed to anticipate some of the suggestions (didn't act on 'em mind - just anticipated them).

Regarding the panning of the guitars, need to know more about how you are processing and how many "free" tracks you have to work with.

For example you could copy the main guitar to a free track then apply a plug in delay and maybe other effects and pan them left/right The delay should help keep it from sounding mono.

The second guitar could be treated the same way or, just pan it slightly to one side.

Again it depends on the hardware/software you have to work with.

I have plenty of tracks to play with if needed.
Before dragging things centre I had the main gtr slightly left & loud with the 2nd Gtr further right but not as loud in an attempt to balance them Bass & drums up centre, about 1/2 L Ride , Crash balancing on R, tambourine centre.
I can do the gtr splits but that still leaves me with how to balance the 2nd gtr.
Thanks for taking the trouble to try to get through my brain warp.

Hi Ray

Great recording. As others have said it will only improve once you pan it around a bit. I wouldn't stress out too much about how exactly you do that. Just twirl around and see how it sounds. Try a few different versions.

I reckon you could spend more energy instead getting a bit more feeling in the vocals. The song has a strong message that isn't reinforced by this delivery. That's OK. You know, it could be a "Belle and Sebastian" style thing. But even then this doesn't seem consistant somehow.

By the way: whatever happened to Rob Clarkson? Just that your song reminds me a little of his satirical view (and probably makes me wanna hear your song with a bit more conviction), and you are from "near" his neck of the woods.

Cheers

Spin Out. Rob Clarkson hasn't been heard of for quite a time. I have an EP of his but haven't heard his name for an age.
I'll talk to Terry about a possible re tracking of the vocals. We live a hundred K's or more apart but are due to meet up sooner than later.
Thanks for the positive comments. I'm not too nervous about most aspect of mixing but panning will spin me everytime.
I'll post a version in a few days. let me know if it gets near the mark.

David K re Fade & Cut.

David K,
I've trialled a fade out & edit as per your instructions. Does it work?
I also managed to EQ away ann explosive P. I amazed myself doing that. I had thought I'd need to actually excise it but was able to pin pint it in a wave editor (waverepair) & pull out all the unpleasant frequencies.
I also normalized the whole track - no need to worry about head room for mastering at this level eh?
Any other suggestions folks?
