One Hit Wonder
Acidrock is trying to talk me into going with dual monitors on a new system I'm putting together. If I recall, you da man when it comes to dual monitors.

So here's my questions:
Does it matter if the monitors are different sizes? I have a 21" and a 17"

What the best (also cheapest) video card that will support dual monitors? Any recommendations?

Hey Moskus...

this is your chance, having dual monitors is the only way you will be able to indoctrinate these boys into your cult of "console viewers".

There's several factors here:
- Two monitors of the same size looks cooler.
- Two monitors of the same size takes up alot of space (might be a problem for some people)
- One 21" monitor and one 17" monitor will do the same job as two equal monitors.

Seriously, the size shouldn't matter (I hear them say :D). What does matter is the resolution you have on those screens. On the 21" I would run 1600x1200 and on the 17" I would have 1024x768, but that's just my preferenses. I run two 19" monitors on 1280x1024.

I suggest you try it. And just for the record, I wouldn't use the Console View if I didn't have two monitors. I always have just the TrackView on the left, and the Console, PianoRoll, effects, instruments and whatever on the right screen.

Try it, and you'll never go back. Guaranteed! :)

If you already have an AGP video card, can't you stick another PCI video card in a drive a second monitor with that?

My BIOS allows me to configure a primary video BIOS, (the AGP), so shouldn't you be able to just add the other PCI card for dual monitor support?

Q.

P.S. Track View sux.

I found this one also: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-139-142&catalog=48&depa=1

The advantage of this, over the Matrox G450 is it is 8X AGP. It looks similar to the eVga maybe. Of course, Matrox is a better known name.

For $58, I just might take the plunge. :)

I've done that too. Works without any problems. :)

Track View sux
Okay... that's even more extreme than me. I use the Track View all the time. :D

I use an AGP, so If I plug in the extra PCI card I have, I can run both monitors?

I've been running dual monitors for a while now, but I have a slight problem. I set it up like moskus, with the track view on the left and almost everything else on the right. If I'm using the piano roll view on the right monitor, every time it gets to the point where it scrolls back to the beginning of the screen, I get a bad click sound. Also, I get distortion if I have my audio effects open on the right monitor. Bad, scratchy audio, but it clears right up as soon as I drag the FX to the left monitor. Is this something to do with the refresh rate? I would love to know why this happens. Thanks
Ed

Sounds like a bus priority issue. The secondary graphics card is grabbing the PCI bus to do it's update and scroll back and denying an appropriate time slice to the sound card.

Two video-cards or one? There might be some problems with the drivers, have you updated them lately (that fixed my problems similar to yours)? Have you looked into "PCI latency" (according to the Cakewalk Forum @ Cakewalk.com it might be a huge problem)...

I have two video cards. They are both the same, Nvidia TNT. Difference is one is PCI and the other is in the big slot (name escapes me now). I have updated the drivers from the Nvidia website. I haven't looked into PCI latency, but I will right now! Thanks.
