My recording setup is digital, but it is outboard (digital mixer, digital multi track, etc.) and I am trying to incorporate a PC for 2 track editing only. I have the comp, the software and a soundcard.

The problem is this, I want to keep everything digital when I dump it into the comp, but my soundcard only has SPDIF out, no in. Can I add another soundcard that isn't all loaded down with special stuff, just a SPDIF in and then control the signal routing in the software from soundcard A (the one I don't have yet) and then after I have edited, rout the signal to the SPDIF out of soundcard B (the one I do have) or is this totally impractical - hence, I should forget about the soundcard I do have, and just get one that has what I need (SPDIF I/O)?

The only reason I am hesitant to forget about that first card is because I got a good deal on it and I am trying to keep the cost of adding the PC to the setup at a minimum.

Thanks,
Brad

Thanks Gidge.

The card I have is Steinberg's project audio card. One mic in, 2 analog in, 2 analog out and a SPDIF out.

I got this Steinberg Cubasis VST package (I know, hold the boo's and hisses. It is cheese, but it was cheap) with one thing in mind, taking stuff that I created soley with the computer and bring it out into my mixer to later add other stuff. Then I got this spiked rod up my ass to be able to dump all of that back into the comp for editing - BAM - no digital in on the soundcard.

I wanted something mildly cheesy because I have never used a PC for anything having to do with recording, save mp3 encoding, etc. so I got the Cusbasis VST project pack, for the price and the fact that it seems pretty entry level but still will do what I need it to (mostly).

I didn't think there would be a soundcard with just a SPDIF in, but thanks for that link - that is a decent enough price for me to just scrap the other soundcard.

ok dont laugh
but i am getting the project pack as well
my question is :
i am a dj & all i need my pc for is to record my 80minute mix's to my pc & then burn them to pc & i wanna start messing around with some programs like rebirth,m sound forge , etc so i can try make a few tracks of my own

will this package be ok for my needs?

thanks,
luke

hey luke14,

if you are gonna use rebirth, do you want to use an external midi controller? i don't think the steinberg card has a midi in...you might want to check out the m-audio audiophile24/96.

ok
stoopid question but what the hell is a midi controller?
i have been using rebirth & fruity loops already on my old crappy sound card that came with my pc

any help would be appreciated :)
luke

i was talking about something like a midi keyboard or phatt boy.

one cool thing about fruity loops 3.0 is that you can play it with your qwerty keyboard.
