Ha! You remembered Dave! :D ;)

Thank you my friend but I'm saving up for a nice Rega or Pro-Ject turntable to get when I arrive in the UK (since those things are AC speed controlled), to play some of my recently bought Elvis LP's. Reels are cool too but I'll leave that to someone else.. ;) The Aloha concert, in question, is least of my favs. Have it on CD but it's been ages since I listened to it. Again, thanks for the heads up! :)

Quad, baby,...

QUAD!!!!!...................;)

QUAD!!!!!...................;)

I have to plead ignorance on this one ... :o :(

What exactly is Quadraphonic sound ? How does it work ?

The studios mastered the recording to 4-discrete channels, as opposed to 2 for stereo

Quadrophonic... was a short lived format from the mid-70's. The 34B and 3340 would play this tape, though. It could be a unique experience,... and no doubt that QUAD-Elvis tape is a collector's item!

"Quad-Elvis",... would be a great band name!

Cool, I'm down for "Quad-Elvis"! :D ... Perhaps I'll bid if the price doesn't skyrocket!!

There was a whole line of quadrophonic gear, back then.

The quad receiver would have sets of "R/L-Front & R/L-Rear" inputs, speakers & e'thing in 4's. You had to have the 4-inputs & 4-outputs + 4-speakers to support the quad format, hence,... the name. (Two discrete receivers or amplifiers could be used for authentic quad playback, or maybe find an actual quad receiver).

8-track cartridges even went quad for a bit,... too.

Quad was a trip. I haven't heard much of it for 30 years or so,... but it's still out there.

It's interesting to note that quad probably kickstarted the home recording thing. TEAC's 3340 (I think) was intended as a quad machine, until one of their employees requested one to use as a 4-track machine at home. Then they realised the potential and made the 3340S which had proper simulsync.
When quad bombed in the marketplace, they made them solely as 'home studio' machines.

Or so the story goes. (And it may have been a different model)

I loved Quad. I still have & use daily a 4 channel amp (in synth mode unfortuantely)- a beautiful beast with 4 lovely AR speakers. I don't possess a quad/4 channel turntable anymore -sad these things are very hard to find & VERY expensive on eBay.
I have been playing around with the idea of making 4 channel mixes into my 4 track tape machine & playing them through the amp though.
Great to see a bit of the history & some chat on the topic.
Cheers

Reel,
I didn't drag mine out to spin it around but here it is insitu - just under the edge of my bed with a good CD player & s snap of the ARS & another looking over an AR to a rear speaker.
Takes 4 channel tape, 4 channel Phono, 4 chan aux + the lesser stereo creatures.
I spend a lot of time spine bashing & reading so I enjoy an album or two with a few dozen pages each night. LUXURY.
Cheers
