Hi Folks,
The title is from a throw away line in "The Killing Fields". the movie was THE inspiration for this ditty. If you've seen the flick you know what the title refers to (think, remember -Ah!).
Up for mixing is a fairly simple song, Mercedes #1, that has tracked:
1 Vox & Flute
2 L Gtr
3 R Gtr
4 Drum KIT
5 Tambourine
6 Guiro
7 Crash
8 Ride
9 Distorted guitar
Please advise as to changes needed in this very basic mix.
I look forward to employing your ideas.

Hey man...cool tune. Vox are a bit outfront in the mix at the start. I think the music at that point could come up. It's pretty quiet. The flute is louder, and fits well. The guitar is pretty quiet. I hear the bass, but it could probably come up a small amount. Drums, probably the same. Bring the main instruments up a small amount.

Song structure is pretty good....nice vibe. Flows together rather smoothly. Just needs to gel a bit more in teh mix department.

Dogman,
Thankee Sai, (Too many hours spent with Stephen King's Dark Tower series obv.), for the comments. You'd be pretty right I think. It was/is a very rough mix through h/phones just to get it up for comment.
1. even vocal levels (downward)
2. Lift the main intrumentation, (bass, drums & gtrs) generally.
Will do.

Cool Tune. The vocals sound a little muddy, and the flute is a tad hot. Everything else sounds great.

Thanks Fishmed_Returns,
I'll address the vox - I've been trying to mask some big tape noise that appears on the vacal track but it seems to have been a little counter productive. I think I'll just automate the faders to completely cut between lines etc. I tried gating but couldn't get it subtly set.
Hot Flute - as in running to red? If not please explain.

Hey RayC - another good tune sir. I'll have to rent the Killing Fields but I think I get the Mercedes #1 reference (who else would have one? lol).

The mix is pretty good for h/p.....

Vocals - Dogman noticed it - just a tad high on the first verse. And there's a spot in the third verse where it drops out ("sharp poles"). Sounds like he turned away from the mic for a couple of words. Maybe you can ride the faders up there. I'm getting to like that voice more as I hear it. Nice melody line.

The bridge? Mercedes#1 Mercedes#1 part is a very catchy bit of writing there. Struck me right away when I heard it. Rest is good too - that part just stands out.

Flute playing is great as usual - nice to hear that around here. At the beginning when it plays by itself, I imagined more ambience/reverb. Just for flavor maybe. The guitar verb makes me notice this more.

Guitars are nicely balanced in the mix - cool sound on Guitars - what are the setting like on your amp? You're getting a good blend of clean with a touch of bite. Reverb is there but no overdone.

The bass is not as present as the Softdance tune. It could come up a touch in some spots whereas it's ok at it's current level in others. Never heard of riding a bass but it is a dynamic instrument (lows versus highs) so maybe.....

Downloaded....like to listen with h/p; maybe sneak another listen later at work with earphones....

Good track !

:D :) :D :) :D :)

Gerry,
Thank you kindly. Do watch the flick - it's timeless.
More verb on the intro.
Even the vox out
Guitars are based on your instructions for So Long - ta.
Even out the bass - presence. Yeah, I've struggled with that a bit. The original mix was very basss heavy & I loved it - actually this song works for me without guitars (hush my mouth) just bass vox & perc.
Thanks for the detail - it's what I'm after.
Congrats on your latest too - when's the CD coing out/becoming available?

Had a few more listens tonight and everything is about the same as previously mentioned. One thing that comes out more on my headphones is that the vocals need to be levelled out a bit - but that was already noted.
It might make the level of the flute sound better as well.....as both are "lead" instruments....

Interesting - no guitars at all? Hmmm... I would keep them in the song myself......

Okay typing as I'm listening...
Nice flute sound, is that real?
You have your usual rhythm guitar and bass sound here, nice  I like how the high end on the bass sticks up a bit so that you can hear the part.
The vocals could be clearer to my ears, sounds like EQing the midrange would do the job.
Okay, I don't know much about flute recording, but sounds like the volume is a little uneven and loud at times during the 1:45 solo... I don't know, compress the flute (?)
Again even during the flute solo I can hear the bass in there, it'd probably actually sound good with even more in there.
Cool tune man, my favorite here is the rhythm section.. and the flute is a cool addition, nice sound/recording :)
