What am I missing about the "render" function?

I finally got the hang of the painting feature in Acid Pro 4.0 and went to town creating a complex .acd file.

Then I tried to use the "render as" and/or the "render to new track" functions.

I thought I followed the directions in the help file but ended up with a silent .wav file.

I WAS able to use Vegas Video 3 to record the playback of my .acd file but it seems to me that this is not the way I should be doing this.

Anybody?

It will be when I figure it all out.

No comments from the Peanut Gallery!

That's pretty cool. Lots of influences there. I haven't started playing with my Acid 3 yet. I need some cool loops or samples.

You might want to pick some up if you can get them *cheap* because what I found after going through an entire CD full of them is that they get old in a hurry and the hot ticket is to make your own. Use the sample collections to get you in the acid frame of mind. The ones I used were all "promos" to entice me to buy collections of samples in various styles- it "came with" Acid 4.0- yeah right: for an extra $5 it did. :(

Ya, I was going to go through some of my vinyl and cassettes and see what I can find. Trouble is I’m always getting sidetracked with other stuff I have to do. Just setting up to collect samples is a moving exercise. I used to think if I had this much room it would be more than enough, but I have too much junk now. Computers and gear everywhere. I eat standing up in the kitchen, if you know what I mean. The guy behind me fucked up his fence and wants me to help pay for a new one. Shit, I didn’t fuck it up and it looked okay to me before he got to it. He started throwing pieces of it into my yard, so I started throwing them back, so I had to go see what his problem was. I should have just picked the pieces up and kept my usual low profile. Shit I need a new leach line for my cesspool before I need a new fence, which isn’t mine in the first place. It was put in when they put the house in. There was nice countryside until then. Fuck those people.

You have to SOLO the tracks that you want rendered, in order for them to be bounced down to a single track.

Yeah- I tried that. Still no luck. And I do understand what the solo button is, what it does, and where it is. I use Vegas, and the layout is the same. Still- all I got was a .wav file that was just silence......

Does it work when you solo more than one track? I tried hitting the solo button on ALL of the tracks and it didn't work.

But thanks for responding. I KNOW there's got to be an easier way.

Doc,

This may be another 'way too simple' shot at a solution, but I rendered an empty .wav once when I had mistakenly checked off the "render loop region only" button when I either:
A. Had no region selected
or
B. Had a region selected where there was no audio present.

So, try unchecking that botton if it is checked off (this is in the 'render as' dialog box that pops up).

Well- I had a region selected (the whole file) but I'll give that a shot since I had that checkbox checked!!!

I was going to offer you the same suggestion, but my good friend Brad beat me to the punch. ;)

Sometimes plugins can fuck things up due to a sample rate or bit resolution incompatibility. For example, some of my Timeworks plugins (or is it the TC plugs?) will work fine when I play the mix 'live' in Acid because apparently somewhere some 'intelligent' decision is being made about the audio input and output. But, when I try rendering the file in 24/96 it either errors or gives back an empty file. If I remove that plugin or render in 16/44, it works.

Another issue might be if you have any midi tracks. I just got 4.0, so I’m not 100% sure how all the midi stuff works yet. But thinking about it, maybe you can’t just render a midi track with virtual instruments? In this case you might have to record the file to a new track?

No plug-ins invoked. No MIDI tracks VST or otherwise. All audio.

I have the render loop region only box UNchecked.

I have ALL tracks with the solo button selected.

Still getting an entire 20MB of silence.

Wassup?

After all the issues with 4.0, SF did an excellent job of selling me Acid with the demo........I got 3.0 instead.

Emmm (as my Irish friends say)….. this may be another stupidly obvious one, but I’ll ask it anyhow.

drstawl, did you actually buy 4.0, or are you still working off the demo???

The download page says the demos are limited time and limited functionality . Things like saving and rendering are very commonly disabled functions in demos.

Paid for in full and everythang. :)

And once again, I appreciate any and all comments. I'm so new to this program there is no stupid, obvious thing that would make me feel like you're talking down to me!

Getting it to work is what I'm after!

TIA.

I can't figure out what the problem could be doc...

Strange indeed.

I have Pro 3, and I can render until the cows come home.

So, in order to try to help you, I am upgrading to ACID 4.
;)

But seriously, my upgrade is on it's way (boxed version) and when I get it, maybe we can meet here in the forum and try a little "real time" experiment with both of us doing the same exact thing and we can compare results ??? That is, if you are still having the problem (I hope for your sake, it is solved by then).

Just an idea. Seems like it might work better for this problem - you know, instead of just saying "well, it works for me on my system"

I have a feeling it might be one little thing.
