I have a good friend, Joe, who lives in Nashville.

I'm posting this without his knowing that I am doing so.

Joe asked me to add guitar to a new song he is working on and I decided against adding guitar. I added mandolin in lieu of adding guitar.

All I had to work with was the quick mix stereo wave file that he sent.

I would really appreciate any and all feedback about the overall composition and advice that would improve the overall mix to share with him when next we talk about the song.

Call On You

I think the mandolin is a smart and appropriate addition. Sounds pretty good.

Theres something funny sounding about the vocals. They're performed well, but sound sort of 'warbly'. I don't know what it is or why, thats just what it sounds like to me. Also, the drums sound very one-dimensional. They don't have any life whatsoever and sound like theyre in a box. Maybe its just the quickie wav file you had to work with, but it sounds like the whole mix besides your mandolin could use more air and better seperation of the instruments.

I like the mandolin Randy...adds some cool dimension to this. I hear what Greg mentioned about the overall mix. Some of it doesn't sound as crisp as the Mando. If that's on his end, no worries. I'm sure he can snap it right back. Overall song is cool. I like the Mando line alot. Why not do a guitar also, and let him intersperse them. If you have time. Adding some sparse melodies like that seem cool with this tune.

Anyways...nice.

Thanks Greg and Ed for listening.

It pretty much comes down that the final mix is up to him to deal with. I simlpy added mandolin to a stereo mix.

I listened closer to the mix that I had posted and I noticed that there was very little distinction between the two mandolin parts that I had recorded. Hopefully, the two mandolin parts stand out a bit better within this mix.

Call On You March 18 Mix

Thanks for listening and the input. I'm sure that Joe will appreciate it as much as I do.

:)

A remix of Call On You

 I despise posting mp3 files! :D

Newest mix sounds really nice...the mandos are really clean and crisp. He needs to now remix it with your additions, to brighten teh rest of the stuff up so it fits better with your additions. Should sound really nice when it's done.

Sounds OK overall, the first thing I notice is what others have said: the drum sounds really don't sound very good. I'm sure everyone here's working with limited resources, but I'd say he needs to get a decent drum machine/drum sampler, 'cause what the song really needs is a sweet, strong drum line! The mandolin is too loud in comparison to the drums/background guitars.

The background guitars definitely need to come up a bit more to fill out the whole sound.

I agree there's something odd about the vocals: might be a mediocre-to-crappy compressor the guy put himself through, or just a not-so-great-mic. The performance itself is solid, although lacking some oomph! Might also have something to do with said compressor/mic combo he used.

Overall, the song/composition are good! With these small changes, it'd definitely be more than listenable :)

Pretty much what everyone else has said.

The guy's got a nice voice, but I don't think it was captured very well on the mic used. Song is nice too.

Drums are too buried, wimpy, something. Bass is lacking as well.

All in all, this could be very nice. But the recording/mix still needs work.
