Ok. I just finished putting up a bunch of insulation on the exterior walls. Yes I wore a longsleeve shirt and mask. Still, some fibers must have gotten to my brain. As I was standing there breathing in my own hot breath in the mask my eye caught a stack of tires in the corner of the building.

I know this sounds crazy but does anyone know how a cylindrical stack of tires (let's say 4 high) and stuffed with filler (old carpet foam, etc) would react to low frequencies? Sure it has a lot of mass but would low (bass) frequencies be able to pass through the rubber to be absorbed? They could be stacked on a dolly for easy movement and covered with some type of material for appearance.

I've got a bullseye on my forehead so someone relieve this craziness.

DD

WHACK!... lol j/k

TRY IT.. TRY IT!

and TELL US
u know.. when its all done..... heh
If i had a studio I'd surea s hell try it.. I'd run out to the back yard, grab 4 or so old tires.. and head to get some insulating stuff and a thin sheet (cotton probably) and set that bad boy in a corner.....

ahhhhhh... sigh.... R&D.....

If you drilled holes in the tires (facing out) and then filled them with fiberglass insulation it would probably work as a bass trap. You can do the same thing with cardboard collumn molds and they are a lot lighter.

Just having them stacked in the corners should at least break up flutter echoes.

Use soft compound racing tires.

Seriously, why not just shove a sofa in the corner of the room on its side? It would be just as ugly and just as effective :)

Also, you could stack a bunch of old car fenders at the rear of the room for polycylindrical diffusion :=)

Seriously, if you try this remember that the way a bass trap works is that the absorbing part is the ONLY way air can get in or out. Sooo, in addition to the f'glas and holes, you would need to caulk between each tire in the stack or you would have an "intermittent" bass trap... Steve

Damn I was hoping this thread would have died. Should have known you guys would catch it before it fell off :D . Say, I think I've still got an old engine block behind the shop I can stick in there!!! No wait. It's chained onto the tractor disc harrow so that's out.

BRING IN THE HARROW TOO.

AND POST IT!

what a concept...
YOU'RE A GENIOUS

keep it up,

Wow, we're present at the birth of a real, live, gen-yoo-wine HEAVY METAL STUDIO... :=)

(Add that harrow, and a new genre is born - HEAVY METAL FARM AID...)
