Call me crazy, but in theory, will this work?

Will this work?…. To use the ADAT lightpipe-out into a basic lightpipe soundcard, then running the lightpipe-out of the computer soundcard to the lightpipe-input of the ADAT to monitor.

The way I see it you could bypass buying an expensive D/A converter (or silly soundcard that does just the same), by just putting the ADAT in record standby. The downside to this, would be you could not monitor sound transfers (although there is no coloring involved). Am I crazy, or would this be a good solution for someone looking to just master an ADAT on computer? By the way, all monitoring would be done ELCO through a mixer and out to monitors.

to elaborate

The chain would be like this:

(ADAT out)- (Soundcard lightpipe in)- Computer- (Soundcard lightpipe out)- (ADAT in, in record sandby) - (Mixer through ELCO snake)- Monitors

Instead of:

(ADAT out)- (Soundcard lightpipe in)- Computer- (breakout box D/A converter) - (Mixer through ELCO snake)- Monitors
