Hi everyone. Does anyone know how to get Cakewalk started? I have it installed. But I can't get sound out of it. I am new to it and I got as far as the Tutorial1 which says to play a sound. I have the MPU401 enabled on my sound card. Any input would be appreciated. Many thanks.
 
It might help if we know which Cakewalk program you have? Guitar Tracks, Home Studio, SONAR?

Have you enabled your MIDI outputs? Go through Tutorial 1 step by step.

Next, check your soundcard mixer. Ensure that the outputs haven't been muted.

The MPU401 is the MIDI interface. If you don't have an external sytnh connected to this port, then your MIDI messages are being sent to nowhere, which is why you hear nothing.

What kind of soundcard do you have?

You really should have read the system requirements (and perhaps have a little understanding about audio vs MIDI) before you bought the program... ;)

If you're using Sonar however, you should be able to use the Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas as a MIDI sound source. :)

I had assumed Surf was using a Creative Soundcard due to the MPU401 being enabled.

Is my logic flawed?

No... probably a reasonable guess. Though "MPU401" is a particular standard type of MIDI interface, not a Creative Labs term, and without further info he could have one of a multitude of Sound Blaster-type soundcards or even an on-the-motherboard sound chip for all we know.

Creative card or not, though, if that's the device he's selected and he has no external synth, nothing is what he would hear. He needs to choose the on-board synth to hear anything.
 
Hi everyone, thanks for all the input. I couldn't respond here yesterday as I got a message saying the server was busy. Anyway I have Cakewalk Music Creator Pro 24. My soundcard is a Crystal WDM Audi Codec and the midi stuff is MPU401 and microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. Hope that helps. All thoughts appreciated.
 
Then basically, you're screwed. :(

You need either a better soundcard (supporting MIDI-syntsh like SB Live!), get a hardware MIDI-source (like a module or synth) or get a software MIDI-source (like the Edirol VSC)... :)
 
Uh, moskus, he's got a software MIDI instrument, the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth.
 
sound card

In addition to trying to get sound out of my present puter, I am getting a new puter that will have a SB audigy card by Creative. The card will be for sound in general. Will it also work for midi to where I can use Cakewalk Music Creator Pro 24?
